Bimini and boom height on H23

I want to add a bimini to my hunter 23, but the boom is so low, I can't get any head room. Has anyone tried raising the boom on this or other models? The sail does not seem to go all the way to the mast head and it appears I could get another 8 inches or so of sail height. Any thoughts?

A couple of thoughts

First try and find out why your mainsail isn't going all the way to the top. The easiest way to find the problem is to lower the mast and examine the masthead and track. If that's not possible, raise the sail as high as you can at the dock and then step off to one side and look at the masthead through a pair of binoculars. All kinds of things could be wrong. The knot on the halyard shackle may be too long (it might be jamming in the exit before the sail reaches the top of the track), the masthead sheave may be worn or broken, there may be some junk in the track near the masthead or the track may need to be lubricated. You may end up having to lower the mast after all. The headroom below the H23 mast is low, but not so low that you can't have a bimini. I've got one. It's made by AmeriSeam in Tampa. I'd give you the contact info but I've lost it. Call Mike Thomas at Hunter and he can put you in touch with them. Good luck. Peter H23 "Raven"

HOW Bimini

I purchased the pre-measured bimini from this web sight. I haven't installed it yet but it appears to fit. I had the sail recut so the aft end of the boom was raised another 6 inches. Raising the boom and doing a major reconstruction of the sail didn't seem practical. Too expensive. I decided to sit comfortably in the shade and enjoy the ride. It's a lot easier that way. How Chandlrey

The Chandlrey uses a company who know their boats as I originally introduced them to the Hunter sailboats. Contact Phil Herring and do specify the Hunter 23 wing keel version. I assume that is the boat you have. Crazy Dave Condon

Get some shade

I too was worried about headroom on my 26.5 when adding a bimini. I ordered the one from this website. If was a perfect fit and easy to install. While I can't stand and sail, at least I sit in the shade now with plenty of headroom. Best feature I have added.

What I am doing,,new owner/old sailor

I was just given the Bim for my H22, and the current owners said it could not be raised while Under Sail, and I can see why. It is a simple Bim, 2 Frames that V up when opened. So, I am moveing the Rail Hinges (Port/Starb) aft 2'. This oughta be enough to go over the OB when Lowered, if not, then I go 2.5'. My H22 never had Stern Rails, (thankfully) so it orta all work. If that simple fix does not cure it, then I will put Slide Tracks on it. Of course I am not going to install any Hardware till I look at all the options and workable solutions, but I think the Slide Rails are going to be the way to go. With Slide Rails I will be able to Position it better for when under Sail and Not under Sail. Johnny
