Anyone have more info on this. I heard a Coast Guard broadcast on the way home this weekend. But only heard info about the bridge, and did not go over to 22 to hear the whole story. Biloxi was behind me, so didn't concern me. Last night I saw on the local news that a barge had hit a bridge in the back bay and brought it down, on top of the barge. Was this the new bridge, or the rr bridge or another different bridge I don't know about. Any info appreciated.

Back Bay Bridge

Did some internet searching and found more info on this. Apparently the barge was trying to make a bridge opening, before it closed to marine traffic for rush hour. For whatever reason, the barge missed the opening bridge, and hit the bridge proper, taking down a complete section of the bridge. Part of the bridge section ended up on top of the barge, and at least one of the barges were sunk. At least it wasn't the new bridge, which was destroyed in Katrina, and just recently rebuilt.

Re: Back Bay Bridge

Hey N&E,

That bridge is in the back bay, 8 miles west of the Biloxi Bay Bridge, just west of where Seadance/Clueless and I keep our boats. If you check the charts there is a south quick west turn right before the bridge. The guy was pushing 8 barges loaded with rocks and limestone. The winds were from the north gusting to about 22kts. IMHO the velocity, the momention and the size of the barges combined with the wind catching them as he rounded the corner were just too much. It was repair from Katrina, but a major route from the north to the Biloxi/Gulfport area.
The waterway is open since the momentum took the vessel south of the channel.
Sorry I missed you the past weekend for the raftup that wasn't, but I too did not want to challenge Neptune.

See you on the water...
Randy
