I have a US Yacht 18 (1982)daysailer. I've only been sailing a couple years and have heretofore trailered the boat. This year I gave in and put in in a slip. I've noticed that I carry about 2" water in the bilge, and I originally thought it was supposed to be there for some kind of ballast, but I'm pretty sure that's not the case at this point. But I don't know--- there were no noticeable leaks when I put it in, so maybe rain is getting in somewhere. My question is :is this normal for this type boat? What do I do about it--- install a pump and figure out where to put the outlet, pump it out manually once in a while, ignore it, put up a boom tarp? Thanks.

All boats seem to have a little water in the bilge, or maybe I've just not spent enough time on newer boats. With wood boats, it was seep through the seams, and having a wet bilge kept the wood from drying out. With glass boats, it usually is rain water through deck leaks here and there. If the boat is a day sailer you probably don't have a battery, so get portable hand pump, a bucket or a sponge depending on how much water you have. Then start looking for deck leaks and rebedding the fittings since a deck leak is usually associated with a fitting that is not on as tight as it should be.
