been thinking about bilge and grey water box on sv "free wiley". Why is there a greywater box in the bilge? All water gets pumped aft to the sea, weather its salt or fresh, so why is there a box-in-abox configuration? Probably a dumb question but was just wondering. If i run the grey from the shower, sinks into the bilge won't they help reduce smell of saltwater and junk by "washing" them out with fresh water? Pat

Hey Patrick, which one of the fleet are you asking about?! My boat has a little grey box, the shower sump. If the shower water went into the bilge there would be two problems. One is hair, the bilge pump does not have the filter(screen) for that. The other is the size of the bilge and the fact that it always has(used to have) an inch or more of water in it. Now that I have two pumps and the small one with a short hose into the shower sump it does better. I don't get all that backwash from the big long hose. But the shower sump is small and water in the smaller hose doesn't smell like it would lying in the bilge. That's my story. Not sure it has anything to do with your question though.

good point Ed

Ahhh, I knew there was a reason I could'nt think of. I hope your reply was not a "balding" joke! Its not funny, lol. I just turned 50 last week and I think that is the rate of hair loss-50 hairs a day. I never thought that hair was a reason, but it makes sense. I also like your idea of a small secondary pump to the grey tank to help with the residual bilgwater from back flow of the larger pump. Gonna give it a try. I always have a couple of inches in the bilge. Hey Ed, I have a short video of the bow of you H37 and the surrounding gulf taken when Joyce and I were guest aboard. I will try and attach it here? Might help with your current sailing position, or lack there of. Will go and find it-i hope

Re: good point Ed

i fyou are having shower water in the bilges you will need to run bilge cleaner thru them to get rid of the skin scale smell--stinks when breaking down ,,lol---run vinegar thru sump to remove the goo--and clean the pump of any hairs that get in there lol..but vinegar is good for sumps--freshens them so i s bilge cleaner lol....have fun!!!!

Thanks Zeehag, but it is a future issue, not current. The sv free willy is an ongoing project. For now all i need to clean out of the bilge is fg grinding dust and sawdust.
