If there is no bilge pump, how about: (1) wet/dry shop van - (2) bucket, bowl, cup - (3) sponge - (4) siphon

Make sure you have the foam filter in the shop vac, not the paper one --and that it's rated for water!

Question : It "belonged" to your husband...what IS it, are you selling it, or launching it?

If launching, you might want to think about putting a bilge pump in!

If this boat is on dry land under trees, make sure that you keep the cockpit and the self bailing cockpit thru-hull fitting cleaned. Any pine needles, dirt and debris that gets into the cockpit can clog this drain. The thru-hull fitting is located in a small well on the sole or floor near the stern.

What happens is a large driving rain fall can fill that cockpit right up and the water will rise right over the companionway step and into the cabin. This happened on my boat about a month ago and I was sick when I found about two inches of water in my cabin.

I had installed a manual bilge pump in my boat back in the 1990s and never had to use it. My pump can be operated with a detachable handle from inside the cockpit. I have the pump rigged so that the water shoots right out a thru-hull fitting between the rungs of my swim ladder mounted on the stern of my boat.
Boy was I surprised when I tried that pump for the first time in years and it worked like a champ!
I set up a third polytarp over my stern to keep the rain water out of my cockpit and so far it has worked.
