bilge pump

Finally I have gotten around to rewiring an O'Day 23 and found that the bilge pump was located under the v-birth just forward of the keel trunk. It is a Attwood Guardian 500 (i.e. 500 gph) and it had battery leads rather than being connected to the house battery. I would like to know if this was the standard placement for the bilge pump and is the pump large enough? The pump needs to be replaced and it would not be hard to relocate. Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks.

Bilge pumps

The location of your current pump is easy to service, but not quite the lowest point of the bilge. The lowest point is just aft of the centerboard locker. If the location works for you, I wouldn't change it. 500gph is more than enough for your boat, and if you are changing the pump, I would wire it with an automatic and manual switch combo panel. I personally like using a separate float switch rather than a automatic pump with built in switch, but the choice of course is yours.

HI Rob,I'm doing the same on my boat as well. Going to buy a new bilge pump and then debate placement. I too was debating on placing it beneath the V berth and forward of the keel trunk, however given I want it at the lowest point, I might put it beneath the dinette seatee. I'll keep the forward space under the V-berth for the knotmeter and depthsounder (which will be installed in the coming weeks).I agree with Brian's message in response to your post. 500 gph should do fine. I installed a bilge pump on my O23. I installed the pump against the companionway bulkhead but under the cockpit. This was the lowest point in the bilge that still kept the pump out of the way. It is, also, very convenient to the battery and a short pumping distance to the transom.Jay Tracy
