I just bought an 1978 O'Day 25. It does not have a bilge pump?? Did they come with one. How should one be installed. Hand pump in cockpit locker? Input hose down to lowest part of bilge? Exit hose where? I would appreciate any help.

I have been mulling this question over also. Coming from a power baot I feel naked without an electric bilge pump on my O-23. Need I worry?

My 2 cents...
25 tall rig A good quality (rule) bilge pump and float switch under the bilge cover wired directly to battery protected by an in-line fuse link (bypass the switch panel). I think the discharge hose is about 3/4", maybe 5/8". It travels aft from the pump to a thru hull just above water line on transom. It's a good idea to have a secondary wire feeding the pump from the main switch panel to manually control the pump. Manual hand pumps are good, in that, no battery power is needed, but does you no good if you're not on the boat when water enters. Good luck.....Gary

You need an automatic and manual. The automatic takes care of the day to day stuff and they are relatively easy to install yourself. The manual is there for the big emergency. If you take it seriously, you need both.

Where is the lowest part of the bilge on an O-23, under the mid-cabin sole? If so is there room to mount an electric pump there? Or is it aft of that? Know this seems dumb but I bought this boat mid winter and it's hard to tell till there is water running around. Thanks

Yes the lowest part of the bilge is just aft of the mid cabin sole. You can mount your pump under the sole for ease of service, it is a little tight.....3 inches wide. but you'll have almost 6 inches of height clearance. The Rule-Mate will fit, but its an automatic pump. Rule also has a pump and float switch combo for around $35 that will work nicely. It pushes 360gph and I think it draws about 2amps and you could wire a bypass to the float switch. Hope this helps Brian

Hi, I too have the same challenge. My Oday 23 is getting refitted all around, with darn near new everything (within my budget). I've been amused by many things, but one thing in that amusement column is that there's no bilge pump!! none! Brian, you mentioned mid-cabin sole. So, you are saying under the dinette seats, there's acess boards under the seat cushions. I should place my bilge pump there, hmm? My Oday 23 is a pop-top, with the dinette to starboard. Where would I set up the discharge to? The hoat has an existing thru-hull, port side for the sink and ice box. But, that thru-hull is WELL below the water line and I don't think it'll suit well for a bilge discharge. I have seen a bilge pump line fed to the cockpit, so it'll drain that way. Need ideas too.
