Bilge Pump Thru Hull

My 1984 H30 has a hand pump (whale) under the sink in the head. It was used as a manual pump for dumping the holding tank at one time. I sail on the great lakes and as everyone knows, there is no discharging of the holding tank into the lakes. What I would like to do is connect this hand pump to a hose routing to the bilge and use it for a hand bilge pump in case my electric one goes out. Does this need to go through the vented loop? I would think that it would have to so that it would be above the waterline at some point. Is there anything else that I would need to do to make this connection? I really don't want to seal up the through hull because I am planning on moving to North Carolina in the near future.

assuming the hand pump has nothing to do with the thru hull any more. But if you are just swaping out the intake house, so it will pump from the bilge instead instead of from the waste tank, yeh a vented loop is wise, but I wouldn't bother. The thru hull valve is going to be kept closed at all times right? You will open it in an emergency if your electric pump fails, and will be pumping like hell on the manual, so I wouldn't be worrying about syphoning and leaving the valve open. On the other hand, I would remove the pump from under the sink and mount it on a movable platform and put on some hoses so you could pump bilg into cockpit or into galley sink, rather than being scunched over in the head reaching into a cabinet to use the pump.

I don't think I would do that!

I do not think that I would use a thru hull to (below the water line) hook to any type of bilge setup. If you are planning on using it again, just put a cap/plug over the valve. Then run yourself a hose to the bilge for the bilge pump. It is easy enough to install an electric pump and discharge fitting well above the water line.

Do it right

There is a reason one does not see bilge pumps hooked up in the manner you describe. A thru hull suggests a below water line outlet which means added resistance when pumping-something I would not want in an emergency.
