The bilge pump on my O 23 (1983) does not seem to be working. Is there a seperate power line to the battery or does it come through the junction box. Also has anyone replaced a pump while the boat is in the water or should I wait for the end of the season for pull out. BTW how much H2O is reasonable to have in the bilge during a dry, no rain, week and do all of the coolers on the 23 drain into the bilge or can I divert it. Thanks, happy sailing.

The Bilge Pump
The bilge pump can be replaced any time, in or out of the water. I have mine wired through a separate togle switch on the accessories circuit. If you have automatic level switch it could be run directly to the accessories circuit. It probably needs to have about an inch or more of water for the pump to work. It takes almost that much to fill the discharge hose. You can check the pump by placing it in a pail of water. Good luck

icebox drain
My "79 icebox drains into the bilge. I use frozen water bottles to cool the box then use the cold water as needed. I don't believe you can route the drain overboard because the icebox is below the waterline.

Ok - Here's a stupid question on the same topic. I have a recently purchased Oday 23 with an electricalpanel that seems to have a bilge pump type toggle switch but I do not know if it has a bilge pump. Where is the lowest part of the bilge where the pump would be and how do you get to it?

On our '80 23 there are actually two lowest points. The forward one is right underneath the mast compression post. You can get to it by pulling up the large bilge cover in the sole. The aft one is just forward of where the keel pendant tube goes through the hull. That one is accessible by removing the top step. Either way, the bilge only holds about five gallons of water. Much more than that and you will see it start flooding the sole. Jack is correct, you can't route the icebox drain overboard as it is below the waterline.

Yes, the icebox drain can be routed overboard, and yes, it is below the water line. I have a 1973 23 with the factory setup. This is common to all of the earlier models, judging by previous posts related to this subject. The sink drain and icebox drain tee together and are connected to a thru hull on the port side, below the waterline. The facory setup did not include a seacock; I have since added a reliable ball valve directly to the thru-hull...peace of mind in case of drain hose failure. It works fine, but stays closed when I am not on board.
