I never pass up an opportunity to betray my own ignorance. After many years of trailering, I put the boat in a slip this year. It's self-bailing when underway, and has water ballast. It's a small USYacht 18'daysailer : Do I need to put in a bilge pump to take care of the inevitable rain accumulation? Any suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks and Fair Winds.

Do you have a battery on board?
Not much point in having a permanently mounted bilge pump if you don't have a battery on board and a way to charge it. I think for an 18 footer it would just add unnecessary weight. The battery would have to be inside a box, etc. Instead you could have a hand bilge pump or something portable with a small gel-cell; just for getting the rain out.

I don't know your boat,
however, I often use a small pump I bought at ACE hardware, powered with 2 D cell batteries, and primariarly used to transfer kerosene from a 5 gallon can into a space heater. I use this pump to get water out of the dink after a rain, and the last inch of water the bilge pump leaves in the big boat bilge. It's all plastic, compact for storage! May be your answer!

Yes, if you
keep the booat in the waster you should have a Bilge Pump. If you don't every time you get rain you better be down there bailing her out! Self-bailing when underway is no good at the slip. The pump does not have to be mounted just fastner down to keep in in place. I would try using a battery strap.
