Found my bilge pump running went I went on board this morning. No water in blige, no dirt or debris by separate float switch. Turned power on on off, checked wiring, checked pump and removed and inspected float switch. Everything appears okay. I'm worried that there is something wrong with the float switch and my batteries will be drained. Should I just buy a new float switch and not take a chance?

bad float switch

replace it! it's not worth burning out your pump (they use the bilge water for cooling). FYI, my new hunter provided switch, with a 5 year warranty, shorted out in just 2 years

You get what you pay for...

When you buy a new switch just keep in mind that you get what you pay for.(most times) I will not mention brand names, but invest in a good switch and sleep well at night. Don

Bilge pump float switch

Thank you all for your responses. I replaced my Rule float switch last night and everything seems fine. I opened the old float switch to see if I could find what happened. There was nothing evident. I thought that water may have penetrated inside the float but there was no water making the two wires a closed circuit . The only guess I can make is that the mercury switch which is a small metal cylinder became defective.
