The bilge pump on our M26S is plumbed to a thru-hull that's approximatley 2 inches above the bootstripe. Would this not cause water to flow into the bilge (via the pump) when heeled or in waves? I remember a frends powerboat having a check valve for this very purpose. The previous owner said the bilge containing the pump would sometimes get water in it - but he was never able to find a leak. yes get a check valve!

I would get a check valve. not expensive. or you could put a large loop in the hose to make it harder for water to enter.

Don't trust just a check valve

You should have a vented loop. The line should run from the pump up to as high as you can get it, where you should place a vented loop, then down to the through hull. A check valve can be placed between the pump and vented loop so that the little water in the line doesn't flow back into the bielge. A vented loop prevents a syphon from happening, which can ruin your day. I small hole in the top of the loop(vent) lets air in to prevent the syphon, but keeps the water from comming out. Do it right or it can cost you big. Like comming down to the boat on a friday night and finding it sunk. Check valves do and have failed at a great cost to the owner of the unlucky vessel.
