Bilge floor leak

Hi folks, When I purchased my Catalina 30 (1986), one of the items on the boat survey, to be repaired was the fiberglass "tabbing" in the fore part of my bilge. While the boat was on the hard this winter, I dried out the bilge and repaired the tabbing. While working on the project, I noticed that just aft of the bilge pump that there were two 1/8" diameter holes on the "floor" of the bilge. They were evenly spaced in the center of the fiberglass liner of the bilge. However, when I pushed down on this flooring it had about a 1/8" give to it. In addition, water was seeping up through both of those small round holes. I checked the forward part of the bilge floor and it was solid without any give to it. I know that this is not good news and am having the boatyard look into it. While I await the assessment of damage however, I would be curious to know if anyone else has had this problem and what you did to correct it. Thank you, John Manzano

Wood underneath glass

John, Search the forum archives for a thread entitled "Bilge Worries". In there, you'll find that Catalina used wood as a filler just under the fiberglass in the bilge, until around C30 Hull #5250 or so (I'm not sure where your '86 fits in there). They also have a fix that involves removing all the wood, and replacing that with layers of fiberglass. They can fax the details to you, if you call David Graas of Catalina Customer Service.
