Help! I bought back my old boatand the owner bought a tohatsu 15 4stroke. It almost pulled the bracket off. It is probably the hunter bracket that came with the boat, rated for 8 hp max. My problem is,do I get a stronger bracket or a smaller motor? I need the power this one has but can my boat stand it even with a heavy duty bracket? anyone with an idea would be appreciated. thanx fletchdoggie

Flet, Without year and weight on your boat it's

hard to say what size would work best. I found that on my 95 H26 my much older Honda 9.9 hp motor will push the boat at hull speed with only 1/2 throttle. To get more amps out of the 5 amp charging system built into the Honda I had the prop repitched to raise the RPM's required to push the boat at hull speed. Now it takes 2/3 throttle to push her as fast as possible. A 15 hp should allow you to almost water ski. A 5 to 8 hp 4 stroke would push your boat plenty fast. If you need more amps to charge your battery, and if the 15 hp gives those amps at very, very low RPM, and if it is even capable of making more that 5 amps, then keep it. I had to add reinforcement onto my motor mount just for the Honda 10 hp motor. When in reverse the motor and its mount wanted to climb into the cockpit with the prop entering first. I would think that a 15 hp motor on your bracket would do the same and slice the bread in the galley at the same time. You might just be carrying useless weight for useless horsepower. Trade the 15 hp for some cash and a nice 4 stroke engine in the range of 5 to 8 hp. Recover some of the money you spend to buy the boat back. Ray S/V Speedy.

Too heavy

I had a Hunter 25 with a 9.9 Yamaha, it was too heavy for this boat, I can't imangine a 15 Hp. 6 knots is the most you will go no matter what pushes it

Some observations

I was at a local outboard shop recently and saw a rather large "small" outboard. It was 9.9 Nissan 4 stroke (same as a Tohatsu, Mercury, et al). It was huge and weighed 114 lbs! I could not imagine putting this thing on the back of my 23. If had to buy a new motor for my 23 right now, I would seriously consider the Nissan/Tohatsu 8 Hp with electric start & alternator. It is a 2 stroke and weighs only a little over 60 lbs. BTW, usually the 9.9 and the 15 hp motors are the same, with only the bore & stroke varied for the horsepower difference. Good Luck Bob

H23 outboard

I have to support Bob on this. I have the original 5 HP Nissan 2-stroke engine on our '23' and it's PLENTY! I'd have to agree that you don't need the extra power, and the extra weight is only gonna give you other problems (e.g: can the transom itself handle it?). Bigger motor + heavier bracket = even more weight! You'll probably end up having to add ballast in the bow of your boat to balance it out. The 15 weighs 114 lb, the 5 is only 55 lb; 11 lb more than the original 2-stroke that came with the boat. Jim Maroldos/v: Lil' Wass Ett
