Biggest Batteries & Placement for H26? (or 260)

I just bought a 1996 H26 that's only been used for 4 hours. It came with a 100w solar panel. The boat is about a 4 hrs airplane ride away until I can get to it in Jan 03 and use it, thus I have to purchase and plan w/o the boat near me. I would like to use about 80 amp hours/day, and ideally could have 400 amp battery storage on board. Current location of batteries is in cockpit locker (but I have no measurements -- can someone tell me interior size please?). I understand the solar panels will provide about 30+amps/day re-charge and intend to buy a Honda 1000w generator to provide the other 40amps/day deficit. Any ideas if this is possible? I will be living on board for about 3-4 months in the tropics living primarily outdoor. I would like to keep (probably) 2 6V 220amp/hr golf cart batteries in this cockpit locker so it's easy for charging purposes. I think the batteries will measure about 11" long X 8" wide X 12" high for EACH battery, I would need to combine 2 6V batteries together to make the 12V system thus both batteries probably have to be stored side by side, where ever the location. Do you think these would fit? Weight of each battery is about 65 pounds. Any ideas / suggestions? I will try to send some photos of the solar if anyone is interested.

battery placement

Battery on my '95 H26 is in a dedicated spot you access from the rear berth. There is a molded in shelf with fiddles to strap it down. There is room for 2 batteries there, but you would have to modify the shelf to make them fit and be stable. Plenty of room there to put in a charger as well (that's where mine is). Not sure how much diff the weight of the extra battery will make. Main thing is to keep the weight balanced. Hope that helps. John S/V Icymoon

aft locker picture

Here's a picture of the locker area aft of the aft berth, with the bulkhead removed. This pic was taken before I modified the shelf to accommodate two batteries. I think three would be a really tight fit. This is the spot designed for the battery, according to my manual. The placement is near the waterline, and the weight offsets the motor on the starboard side. I've never heard of batteries placed in the cockpit locker, and it doesn't seem like a good idea to have the weight that high up.

this works for me

I have 2 gel-type 27 on board, one in the usual place behind stbd aft bunk, and the other in the side locker in the head (see pic in poto album, 260 improvements) I run a Honda 1 KW gen to a 20amp true charger.... run everything off 12 volts, this has worked for me... 14 days on the water, I still want to get a solar pannel...normal elec. loads cool box, GPS,depth,VHF, TV-DVD, and expanded below decks lighting

Works for me

We have put in a false floor in stern box on our 260 (under the seat) Thats where the batteries are. Easy to service. Do not really think the weight of the batteries makes any difference to the handle of the yacht. Just like having someone sitting there!
