Big time corrosion in bilge

The steel maststep post under my 1980 36 cabin sole has rusted badly. It is so corroded, I cannot even see how it is installed.I've seen references to replacing this with a stainless post.Can anyone tell me just how to go about doing this? Does the sole have to be cut into to gain access?

Unfortunately, my problem is not the same as the 37's. I do not have anywhere near the access in the bilge that the 37 has and there is just a steel support under the compression post.
