Bicycles on your boat

I am thinking about cruising Cape Cod next summer, and having some bikes for transport would be really handy. I can't afford those folding things that you see in the sailing stores, so it will have to be two full size bikes. I was contemplating lashing them to the rails, maybe by the transom someplace. Anybody have any experience or advice about this kind of thing?

Two methods

On one trip I put them below in the cabin but the potential for damage is too great. My next trip I bought an automotive bicycle carrier for a car, and i mounted it on my stern using the stern pulpit, The bikes hung safely off the back and were out of the way. Once in a while the wheels dragged thru the water but rinsing off with fresh water and a little oil and no problem. I never saw anyone else do this but it worked really well!! Dave

The Miller way.

See the Link below for Bob Miller's way. I really like Dave's idea for the carrier off the stern. A version of that would be to bolt a front fork mount to the stern pulpit. But then you have to deal with where to put the front wheels. I'd like to carry my good road bike but will probably opt for used folding bikes.

Keep an eye out for used

You can find them, and fairly priced, at swap meets and consignment shops. LaDonna

Comments from Miller about the Miller way

It's hard to tell from the picture, but I tow a dingy. Also, my BBQ is on the stern rail, my step latter is on the stern and my flag is on the stern. So, I couldn't carry my bikes on the stern. The other comment concerns salt water corrosion. The bikes survived, all except for the chains. I had to replace those after the vacation was over. Also the boat and the bicycles suffered a little rubbing and deterioration of the finishes, but not too bad. It was really convenient having the bikes along, but I haven't done it since. A little too much hassle for me.

Cape Codder here too!

I too live on Cape and keep a Hunter 380 in Wychmere Harbor in Harwichport and would be glad to share knowledge of all the harbors around here. We visit most of them every summer and have lots of information if you care to e-mail me. If you don't need the info we'll see you out there this summer!
