This holiday weekend we sailed out for four days straight, only touching land once for water, fuel, trash disposal and pumpout. My wife's back began to ache the last two mornings after sleeping in the aft bunk. I am thinking of enhancing/replacing the cusions in the aft bunk. Before I try anything, has anyone out there come up with something better than what was supplied by Hunter? After three nights, those cushions just don't cut it. -Jay

Jay: There are some things to try but nothing is very cheap (but comfort is worth it). 1. Just replace the foam in the cushions with a higher density foam. 2. Have a cushion made with High Density foam on the bottom and lower density foam on top. This keeps the cushion somewhat soft without bottoming out. 3. Inner Spring Mattress. 4. Latex Mattress (this is the ultimate)

Cheap way out...
You could also try a cheap air mattress that is only partly inflated under the existing foam.

Waffle foam mattress
We put a waffle foam mattress under the Hunter mattress. It makes it alot better and is a cheap fix. It's not like your own bed but we feel it made a big difference.

Replace with Queen size foam
We replaced our factory aft berth cushions with a 4 inch thick high quality foam rubber (yellow in color, not white). Find a manufacturer that will cut to spec. We went to Southwest Foam in Phoenix and cost about $80.00. The 60x80 size fits snug but allows the use of queen size fitted sheets. You don't bottom out. For less money I thought of trying the blow-up Coleman like camp mattress but didn't try it. Maybe someone else has.

Here is what I did
My v-berth had the same problem – not enough between me and the fiberglass. What I did is take regular 1” Styrofoam and cut it out to fit under the mattress. This releaved the problem a little but still not enough to make sleeping on the boat as enjoyable as I would like. I then took the egg crate mattress cover and placed it under the Styrofoam. This caused the Styrofoam to act more as a box springs. This helped a lot more (although I think regular foam would work just as well). I have had that arrangement for just over a year. I finally broke down and I am having my foam in the cushions replaced with high density foam. The boat across from me at the dock has it and it feels GREAT. I will get it this weekend – I’m so excited. If that does not work, I am going to buy either a mattress pad from BrookStone’s that is made from that ‘space age’ foam. You have see the baseball pitcher throwing the egg at it and it does not break. This will be $$ but a good night’s sleep is worth it. I have also looked into a sheep’s wool mattress pad. I finally got to sleep on one. It is great in the winter but it would bake you in the summer. Let us know what you finally decide to do.

I did a complete cushion replacement. I threw the old (stinky) cushions out and built new ones out of open cell foam. I used open cell because it does not absorb water or odors. Cushions are easy to build and cover. Go to WWW.SailRite.com and get their free catalog. They have videos with complete instructions. I went from 2" foam to 4". They are very comfortable.. Tempurpedic Matress
My wife had the same problem with the factory installed foam cushions. We put eggshell foam over the top of them and it was still a little uncomfortable. I went to a local Fabric store in Boise and bought a 3" thick piece of tempurpedic foam for around $120. I replaced the factory foam with the new foam and put them back in the boat. The difference is amazing. It's ten times more comfortable. It's like sleeping on a high end box-spring and matress. It's worth the extra cost for the tempurpedic foam. Happy sleeping. Tony Johannsen

Tony: What is tempurpedic? I thought that this is a trade name for a bed. Are you sure that it is not Latex Foam? Regardless that is a very good price. Do they also have this in 4" and thicker foam too? I'd have to agree that egg crate is a waste of time/money if you have back problems. It is not going to do anything for support.

The guy at the store called it Tempurpedic and or Sweedish foam. It's not latex but close. It's the foam they use in the Tempurpedic matresses.. Whatever you call it, it makes for a great night of sleep. tj

walmart to the rescue
We purchased a queen sized egg crate mattress pad and installed it on top of the existing cussions. Was easy to cut to fit and added more dept to eliminate bottoming out. only about $20 at wallmart made a big improvement
