Greetings AllI'm posting this on behalf of my brother, who has a
Bristol 29 with a Beta 13.5. I figure there are a lot of folks with
that same engine in this group, so here goes:Transmission fails to engage in 'Forward'.Boat has been on the hard in Florida for 1 year. Transmission was working properly when boat was hauled.
After launch, engine was started and transmission engaged.
Nothing happened. Went back and forth between Neutral, Forward, and
Reverse several times. After a few minutes Reverse started working.
Forward works occasionally, but mostly not - boat stays in neutral.
Shifter on engine appears to move, but I don't know how far it is
supposed to move. Tomorrow i"m planning on disconnecting the shifter
cable and shift the tranny manually. Before launch I changed the transmission fluid. I sucked out
as much as I could through the transmission dipstick - got about 125 ml.
Seemed odd, because dipstick notches showed adequate fluid and manual
says 200 ml capacity. Added 200 ml back in.

Have you checked that the gear cable is moving the gear lever fully to the forward and reverse position? I'd do it by temporarily removing the cable and moving the lever by hand just to be sure.

Make sure the transmission cable is intact. I found my center cable actually came out of the sheath where the sheath rusted and the plastic protective sleeve disintegrated. I agonized over selection of a correct replacement but the remove and replace process was easy. Alan

I had the same problem last spring. Turned out it was the cable, or
more accurately, corrosion where it attached to the transmission. A few
shots of WD 40 fixed the problem as far as I can tell but I always make a point
of cycling through reverse and forward a few times before leaving the dock now
to avoid any surprises. There have been none since. I also spray a
little lubricant on the linkage when ever I have the cockpit hatch up.

My linkage (attachment of cable to transmission) corroded and broke. I replaced the cable and now keep that connection pretty greased up with stiff grease. Nicholas H. Hi - Make sure that the cable to the transmission is not kinked or arranged
round sharp corners. If you have disturbed locker contents near the cable
you could be affecting gear change.( Spare anchor on it etc)

As others have said disconnect the cable at the gearbox linkage, with engine
stopped move the lever manually you will hear and feel a faint click as the
gear lever moves through forward, neutral reverse. It is possible that
something has dropped into the engine bay preventing movement. If everything
works manually it must be the cable or the gear change lever in the cockpit
Reconnect cable to the engine and disconnect it from the lever in the
cockpit. Try changing through the gears if this works and the problem
persists on reconnecting everything it would seem to indicate a problem with
control lever assembly in the cockpit.

An afterthought is your control one which you pull out to run the engine out
of gear. If so something could be interfering with that.

Mike
