Has anyone had any experience with the Beta marine diesel engines for their sailboat. I am thinking of repowering to a 3 cylinder 20 or so and am looking for less vibrations, quieter running, and a little more pumch in heavy seas. Much thanks for your feedback, John Blakely

I don't have one

but the diesel mechanic on the Cal list is a big fan of them and most of the replacements there are going to Betas with excellent feedback.

I'll give you a dealers responce...

John, There are realy only two engine manufactorers in the small marine diesel arena, Yanmar and Kubota. Everyone knows of Yanmars reputation. Beta, Universal, Westerbeke and Phasor all use a Kubota engine and adapt them for marine use. Beta has enginered their engines for easier servicing than the others. Depending on which hull you have you, should be able to upgrade to a 3 cylinder engine. A 3 cylinder engine is substantialy smother than a 2 cyl. The physical dimensions of a 20 to 30 hp are nearly the same, so get the biggest bang for you dollar. Pat, did you forget Bukh?

Pat: Did you forget to mention Bukh engines? I believe that Bukh are actually built as Marine engines and unlike like Yanmar and Kabota that are actually marinized tractor engines. http://www.crinan.ca/bukh.html I have been aboard a H'31 with one of these engines and I must say that they are very quiet and vibration free. I do not know what the price is, but they are definitely worth a look.

Steve,

I was only mentioning the main brands. Besides Bukh, theres Vetus, and Volvo. There are so many options that it can get hard to decide on what to go with. Pat

Bukh Engines

I repowered 3 yrs ago; replacing a clunker of a Yanmar YSM-12 with a Bukh Dv24me..24hp, 2 cyl and total cost was $8,000 installed. I run the engine about 100 hrs. a year and there's been absolutely NO problems. I spent a year researching the replacement project on my 78H30. It's been well worth the money and now you couldn't sell me a Yanmar if a Geisha came with it! Anyone interested in more details can contact me and I'll be glad to do whatever I can.

I do have one of those

Danish, true marine diesel, capable of continuous operation (24/7), survives upside down roll, used in 40% of worlds lifeboats? Once imported as a Westerbeke label.
