Beta engine winterizing

Hi folks. I was little busy lately and couldn't do much research about the winterizing of my first inboard/diesel engine. I am scheduled to bring it over to the marina tomorrow. I replaced all the fluids, filters etc. at the spring and used the engine only 3 hours whole season so i am tempting not to change the fluids+filters again(coolant, oil. transm. oil) till next april. Would that be ok? Other than that i am aware that i will -fill up the thank(almost full anyway) - treat diesel with biocides/ fuel treatment/ anti-gelling - remove the raw water intake hose and dip it in a 5 gallon bucket filled with a pink antifreeze, run the engine till the pink stuff starts coming out of the discharge. -Plug all the exhaust inlets, fuel breather, air intake etc to seal out the moisture -remove batteries Any other point that i am missing? Thank you.

Make sure you use the entire 5 gals of pink stuff instead of "till you see pink stuff". The pink stuff cannot be diluted with water at all or it will freeze and damage your cooler. Oil is cheap and engines are expensive. Is your oil black or golden? If golden, you should be O.K. with waiting till spring, but if it were my engine I would change it because I always err on the side of caution. If black, change it. After about 6 months, used oil starts to break down and turn acidic. Its additives are degraded and does not lubricate and protect against internal corrosion as well as it should.

Ok you right actually its not a big deal to change the oil. Since i have only used the engine for few hours, the idea came up to skip it. I live in NY hudson valley area.

You could always get an oil analysis done via a company like Blackstone Labs. to see if the oil needs changed.Of course the Beta oil change uses so little, it hardly seems worth the $28 to get the analysis done.Oil analysis is useful if running more expensive synthetic oils that require gallons instead of quarts to find out how many hours you can go on a change. For what it's worth:First, use your engine more. It, like a horse or a dog or a child, needs to be run & run for a while. If your Vega is in the water for 3 months, three hours is a tiny amount of use & not using it is not good for it. You need to burn that diesel fuel that you bought last spring through it as well. Fuel stabilizer can only do so much for fuel that's sat in the fuel tank for years. Second, the price of the Beta 14 is what? $7000 plus shaft, prop, instillation, control system? Maybe $10,000 all totaled up. The price of two quarts of oil plus filter is maybe $20.00. With the attached oil changing pump the only difficult part is reaching the little valve fitting beneath the pump so old oil can be pumped out (don't forget to close it again afterwards... ) & finding a hose that fits over the oil outlet tube & a jug to run the old oil into.I don't know much about engines, but I have a cousin who does, thank the Good Lord, but I do know that the best way to maintain your engine is to run it regularly till it's at running temp & change the oil & filter every season when you put it away.Third, the fuel filter, according to the manual, should be changed every 750 hours (!) but I've found my engine takes a few tries to start now after 4 years & maybe 120 hours, so I'm going to change the fuel filter either later this week as I winterize the engine (oil already changed) or next spring for sure. Fourth, there is a feeling that oil should be changed, even new oil, after sitting in the engine over the winter. I don't go that far but there's them that do. Question is, how many engines do you want to have to buy over your lifetime with your boat? Fifth, The other question is, about running your engine more than motoring at slow speed into & out of the harbor, there may come a time when you really need that engine to start & run perfectly - to get out of the way of a ferry or to make it around a point with the tide running & you want it to start immediately & run like a top. The difference between hope it will start & confidence that it will start can make all the difference in the world to your boat, your crew or passengers & you. I have sailed all my life & only got an engine - the old Volvo Penta - when I got my Vega (for $1.00 twenty five years ago) but I have been in situations as described above when the wind died down & the Volvo wouldn't start & when it finally did hadn't enough power to do much & the tide damn near put us on the rocks... the new Beta engine runs well & has started first time every time up until this August. I think it's old fuel (I fill the tanks to minimize condensation over the winter & rarely run the tank dry; my cousin put an additional 13 gal tank in the port cockpit locker when we were considering long cruises but unless I can fix my hips & knees that's probably not in the cards). So I'll change the old fuel filter, no matter what the manual says about 750 hours. The manual is for all Beta engines, even the big diesels that run continually on fishing boats etc. & I suspect their diesel fuel doesn't sit around for months or years... Trust me. Change the damn oil & run your engine often. from mypad nn

Yep, did all that. Didn't touched the coolant though. There was less fuel in the tank than i thought so put in about six gallon fresh diesel. I feel good.
