Beta 14 old diesel removal.

Hi. It appears to be in grat shape, oil, filters etc. all looks good. I was curious so i connected the battery and turned the key for 2 second on dry to see. it turned strong. i have to check the paperwork but i believe its about 6-7 years old. According to the previous owner; fuel tank(original one/ original location) removed and steam cleaned about the same time with the installation of beta. He estimated total hours of use about 15 hrs. The boat was sitting on dry for 3 years with her fuel tank filled with the diesel and he suggested that i need to get all out and put fresh diesel. He also highlighted that it was properly winterized before the lay up. i spoke to a friend who is a car mechanic. his plan is somehow getting all the diesel out and power it up(with new fuel of course). after running it for a while, replacing all the filters and oil and we should be good to go.- is it too optimistic to hope that the fuel tank will not have too much slime, grime, build up etc for 3 years sitting? - what would be the good way to start getting rid of the old fuel? i tried to reach with a hose and drill pump from the filler hole on the deck. no success. The little nuts and bolts on the top of the fuel tank seems to be hard to reach, maybe best not to be messed with. - if diesel is out with success and the tank looks good, what precedure should be followed to ensure that we are doing the right thing. Thanks.

Not too optimistic, I've used fuel older than that. If it's the round tank in the port side locker, I'd recommend draining it by closing the valve at the bottom, then removing the hose and draining directly into a container. If the hose is too difficult to get off, or if it's in an awkward position, you can put a hose into the filler and either siphon it out or use a pump.Jacob

The biggest problem with diesel tanks is that you don't know you
have a problem until you hit rough weather which stirs up all the
crap in the tank which then plugs your filter. If you can get a
small sample from the lowest part of the tank, this will tell you if
there is water or crud which needs to be cleaned out. In your case,
I would run it as is and keep spare filters handy. Be sure you can
change the filter and bleed the system quickly to get back underway
before you wash up on that lee shore!

Any wires coming out of the area where the nuts and bots are. If so that might be the sender for the fuel level gauge. If no wires coming out of it and it is about 6 inches across it is probably an access port for cleaning the inside of the tank. Probably the
best way would be to find where the hose connects to the fuel pump on the engine, disconnect and pump with your drill from there. The fuel could still be good. Run it through a filter and add a biocide. diesel lasts a lot longer than gasoline. WaltFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com on behalf of n4lbl alan.schulman@... I don't know enough to answer your questions. If the fuel wasn't mixed with a biocide e.g. Sta-Bil (

http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/d...Search_N0405_-1_-1&pt=N0405&ppt=C0126 ) you will probably have growth in the tank. Maybe not if you are located somewhere like McMurdo Sound!Sta-Bil 22254 - Fuel Stabilizer and Performance

I seem to have missed the original post. If I recall the metal (monel?) tanks were on the series 1 and plastic was used later. I could be completely wrong on this. I do know that the Albin 0-21 that Lyric (series 1) came with had a metal tank. I put a Tempo
plastic tank under the cockpit sole. It was a tight fit. WaltFrom: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com on behalf of walt judy brown allore bestvega@... [AlbinVega] AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com

My series I Vega had a copper tank in the starboard locker for petrol (gas). Copper isn’t suitable for diesel though, hence plastic tanks later on.  Alisdair  From: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com [mailto:AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com] Sent: 07 March 2017 21:45To: AlbinVega@yahoogroups.comSubject: Re: [AlbinVega] Beta 14 old diesel removal.  I seem to have missed the original post. Alisdair,I fear I have to display my ignorance, but why is a copper tank unsuitable for diesel? I've had mine for over 20 years and it is still fully functional! So I'm curious as to why you say this. Thanks, Hal

Somebody probably already suggested disconnecting a fuel line, and hooking up a cheap fuel pump to pump it out (https://www.amazon.com/12V-4-6-PSI-...mp;sr=8-5&keywords=facet+fuel+pump)Around here (Colorado), diesel lasts awhile as it is not humid and doesn't condense water in the tank. When I got my boat, I pulled the tank and after almost 40 years, there was quite a bit of sediment on the bottom. If you try to take off the access plate while the tank is in place in the bilge, good luck not dropping the screws into the bilge;)Colorado has "hazardous waste" disposal collection sites that will take old fuel for "free".As you can tell, I obviously did not pay attention very well to see if your boat is a series 1 or later. just for the clarification, It is the plastic tank sitting down at the bilge cavity. i will take some pictures today but as i recall, very limited access. Also i have noticed, whatever you drop, goes to the bilge and you never recover it. i may have a dozen nuts&bolts there already.

It is interesting that back in September, there were at probably 5 Albin Vegas in Colorado, too bad none of them race, we could race as a one design fleet at Regattas. I hope your new boat works out well for you. If I remember correctly, didn't that boat have a newer Beta engine without many hours? Tim From: "bundchen1263@... Albin Vega Anacortes
My fisherman friends tell me that diesel almost never goes bad in Washington State where I am. My Vega has the stainless tank in the port locker and came with a cleaned tank and no fuel gage sending unit so I could see that the return fuel line goes to the bottom of the tank a few inches from the uptake and the lowest corner. I assume the return flow keeps the junk stirred up and mixed. Does anyone know what kind of volume a Beta 14 has in it's return fuel flow? I installed a Racor cartridge filter with visible water & sediment bowl before the Beta cartridge. I check the bowl before every start.

It is interesting that back in September, there were at probably 5 Albin Vegas in Colorado, too bad none of them race, we could race as a one design fleet at Regattas. I hope your new boat works out well for you. If I remember correctly, didn't that boat have a newer Beta engine without many hours? Tim Tim do you know anything about this boat? I can still see the remnants of the previous name being "snookums II". it s a cali boat before that, used by the sea scouting programs. Previous owner Scott, really nice gentleman. Did the beta upgrade while living another place but after moving CO, lake sailing and traveling 40 miles to it didn't work for him. Engine looks ok, probably very low hours as well. interior and hull was neglegted. I scraped the bottom to gel coat, 5 coat epoxy interlux e2000 barrier coat, 3 coat bottom paint over it. I also worked on the topsides. List goes on...Scott told me "you may have to put about 300 hours of elbow grease". You know how it is, i ll feel lucky if i can splash it this spring:)'
