I will be re-powering my Vega (1011) originally a gas version with a Beta 14 diesel. From reading old posts there is some things I need to do to accomplish this. I was wondering if anyone had done this, has instructions and or pictures/advice they could share. Thanks so much in advance / Hans

Hi Hans – I have installed several Beta 14s in Vegas including Series 1 boats that had the original albin petrol engines. I don’t have photos but if you need help/advice on particular points contact me on mike@...

Regards

Mike

Have a look through my album. I put a Beta 14 in my old series one. In amongst all the photos there are some relating to the installation. I don't think I have any of the fuel tank. I made my own fibreglass tank to the same diameter as the original copper tank, but longer to give an approx 35 litre capacity. It mounted to the same location using all the original mounting hardware. I did this because copper tanks accelerate the oxidation of diesel fuel and I wanted the additional capacity.

I installed a Beta a few years ago and found this booklet helpful. Not sure
where I got it, but probably from Steve as I bought an entire 'kit' from
him.

Took me several days and I did have help off and one. But then I am an old
guy, so everything takes a little longer. I installed the Centiflex
coupler, Volvo stern tube seal, new shaft and prop, all purchased from
Steve.

Jeff- Nice pics.. How did you figure out what to do with the mounting plates? I was hoping just to use the mount as is with maybe a plate and shims as needed. I might need to rethink that. Thanks / HansSent from my iPad

Chris, I would love to get my hands on a copy of that booklet. My goal is to remove as many of the unknowns as I can. If it were possible to digitally photo and send me electronic files I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks / Hans

Hi Hans, I think the drawings for the mounting plates are in the documents section of the yahoo site for the Vega. They are specific for the engine bed of the Mark 1 to the standard Beta mounts and are, from memory, intended to bolt on top of the original bed as adapter plates. As I found out, however, my engine beds needed rebuilding due to oil damage and corrosion - something I suspect a lot of older boats could suffer from as well. In hindsight, I should have constructed a specific bed to suit the Beta directly which would have left more space on the underside of the engine. Not a big problem, however. The oil extractor pump needed relocating and the beds required notching to allow clearance for the bellhousing.

If you do not yet have the Beta they will modify the mounts on the engine to suit yours so no modification will be necessary. In Canada this costs $300, a bargain when you look at the labour to modify your beds. There is a series of measurements that need to be taken for this. It is on the Beta site or you can contact the Beta dealer.
