I just checked the Slocum Society pages and decided to post a link

http://www.joshuaslocumsocietyintl.org/solo/solotable.htm For all of those folk that think that it is the boat that makes the trip and the skipper just goes along for the ride. Look for the popular brand names among those that have done it.

Checked it out

Ross, I checked out that website, and was kind of surprised at the large percentage of boats that are under 35'. I always knew that lots of smaller boats had done it, but not that many.

Two Allieds made it

The Allied Seawind Ketch and an Allied Ludders 33 sloop have circumnavigated. I still give more credit to the skipper than to the boat, although the vessel should not be taken lightly. I guess there is no way to know how many failed attempts were made.

List of circumnavigators from 'west coast' of US

www.latitude38.com/features/circumnav.html You'll note that the most Popular 'designer' represented on this particular 'list' is Robert Perry with his Valiant 40, Tayana37, CT37/(Union 36), Passport and CheoyLee 40 designs as the most 'popular' of this list. Overall & By far, the Valiant 40 is probably the most 'popular' chosen boat for 'circumnavigation', followed closely by Tayana 37, Passport, Westsail, Pacific Seacraft, etc.

Ross, I wonder how complete that list is

Maybe you have to join the society to get on that list, but from everything I have read Patrick Childress sailed a slightly beefed up Catalina 27. I am pretty sure he did it alone. I think these are a more complete list http://www.solocircumnavigation.com/SoloSailingCircumnavigation/SinglehandedCircumnavigators.htm http://www.robinknox-johnston.co.uk/da/20103 Either way here is a good book for 'WhiteSail' to read about ideas on what he should have on an offshore boat http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/007137616X/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top Here's a nice start if he's going on the "cheap" http://www.amazon.com/Twenty-Affordable-Sailboats-Take-Anywhere/dp/0939837722/ref=cm_cr_pr_sims_t

After reading that list I would be reluctant to

try to make a list of sizes as in under 30, 30-35 ,36-40, etc. or of designers. I think that the list shows that almost any boat in skilled hands and well prepared can and has crossed oceans safely. In a few cases it may have been dumb luck that made the voyage a success and in other cases it may have been just plain bad luck that resulted in failure. From what I have read determination and sometimes pure cussedness is all that gets you through some of the tough spots.

The Slocum Society has some pretty strict

requirements for joining that club. Tania Abei was excluded because she had a friend with her for a couple of hundred miles. You must keep complete logs with calculations for your navigation. records for daily positions if corrected may be struck through with a single line so that the line is still readable. I know that you must hit your antipodes.
