Alan, again

Thanks everyone for you very helpful information. I plan to measure the cockpit hatchway this weekend as I already have the plywood for a template. Tools, shop will not be a problem for me since I have alot of good natured pals who know how to work with wood. However, I guess the final question excluding "teak" would be the next best thing in wood. Winter is fast upon us all so I'll also plan on building a portable stove frame with additional cabin upgrades on this ole 1970 Catalina 22. God, I love little projects like this. Especially since I'm moving into a new home soon with plenty of room to work! Thanks so much for all your responses, you guys are great!

Take a look at oak

Since you are moving into a new house and undoubtedly will be making inumberable trips to Home Depot, you may wish to examine the oak boards they sell. Oak is a hardwood and may be a bit difficult to mill, router, etc. but with proper finishing it should hold up pretty well. I personally would try to leave it in its natural hue as I think it is most pleasant. Another choice would be mahagony which I think will be more expensive and more difficult to obtain. Of course, there is always teak, but I think cost wise and availabity wise compared to oak, you may wish to go with the oak. And if you are married, be careful your wife doesn't get to see the oak boards as they may end up as shelves.

The price might be right

Try finding a place that make trailers for the frieght industry, or truck bodies, They often times use mahogany or other hardwood for the flooring and will have cut off, odd sized, pieces and they may make you a great deal. It is usually notched fit (like a square tonge and groove) and is approx 1" thickness. The extra thickness is good as the groove on your boat is only maybe 1/2" but you would want your boards to be more robust than that. you could use them as is, or cut, plain, and glue to make wider pieces. Good luck, Brian
