Best way to store Galley/Vberth Cushions

Hi:

Well, it is this time of the year for us living up north (Rochester NY) to start getting our boats out of the water for the winter. This year I added brand new cushions and covers to my O'Day 25 and boy they added so much to the boat, considering the old cushions were the original ones (30 years old) and were quite smelly and in bad shape. Since it really didn't make much of a difference, in past years I left the old cushions in the boat throughout the winter. Now that I have new cushions, however, I want to make sure I protect them as much as possible. I was thinking of bringing them into my garage cause I don't have room for them in my house. Any suggestions as far as how to store them? Do I put them inside plastic bags?

We store ours haning from the ceiling in our basement covered by a sheet. I will add it is a dry clean area. The biggest worry is always rodents so be careful with them in your garage, and I would not put them in plastic bags, I prefer they be able to breath that is why we use the sheet.

I've been storing my boat cushions on a bed in one of my extra rooms but this year I'm going to leave them in the boat because they are the original cushions and are getting in bad shape. I really need to have them recovered. If you have a couple of bedrooms you could put them in plastic bags and store them under the beds. If you have a nice cellar, you could also store them down there up high off the floor.

As the others have said whatever works best for you. However I would agree and not put them in a plastic bag outside in the garage, you might draw moisture.

I have a tall garage so i made a shelf over the garage doors and have a 4 foot storage area there now. Couple 4x8 sheets of plywood and chains to hang them. Makes for an attic like area there over the garage doors.

I put them there open and not wrapped. My worry wold be rodents, and or moths. Rodents do not seem to to get up there no dropping have been sighted but moths abound in the garage. So I use cedar blocks and so far so good. I hate the smell of moth balls who wants to sleep with that smell on the boat in the Spring!

All my boat cushions go up there. Last year I had my carpet cleaner clean the cushions along with my carpets so they are all fresh this year. I put those dryer sheets in them as well to freshen as well. I could not remove the covers though they have zippers. They have those buttons on them and I would have undo the buttons to get the slip covers off. That's why the carpet cleaned did them.

just keep em dry and cool and you should be fine.

We stored ours in the attic last year, but I fretted about mice all winter long. This year, they're going to stay in the boat. Humidity drops considerably in the coldest part of Winter and it's probably a good idea to allow air to flow through the boat, which will help dry it out.
