I plan on repainting the top side of my hunter 25.5. What is the best way to remove the factory stripe tape that is on cabin and on the hull just below the toe rail? Ted

There are two ways but...

the one that I used was the stuff they sell in a spray can (Decal Remover) spray it on let it sit for an hour or so then scrape with a scraper, reapply as nessasary.Worked pretty good, took two cans for a 31. The boat looks a HELL of allot better without them! Or you can use a hot gun heat the strip and scrape off. Don't know how well that works though.I would think that it would leave some glue on the boat so you will probably need decal remover anyway.

Whatever method works for YOU!

Ted: There are several methods. 1. Hair dryer/Heat Gun. You need to be careful with the heat gun, you can damage the gel coat with too much heat. Either device then requires that you have some type of a scraper (plastic or wood is probably the best) to help lift the tape. You can also use some Island Girl Pink to help soften up the material and glue. 2. Eraser. This is a device that I used on my cabin stripes and it worked like a charm. I also used it on the stripes just below the toe rail and it took quite a while. The difference was that the vinyl on the cabin was very thin from the UV. The ones below the toe rail while being checked and crazed where in much better condition. If you look in the Photo Forum, you will see what this Eraser looks like. You can purchase one at the local automotive paint store. They are used to remove pin stripes from automotive paint. When you get done you may want to consider redoing your gel coat with an Island Girl Treatment rather than painting. It is worth trying. Once you paint the gel coat you are pretty much stuck with it. If you do not like the results of IG, you can always paint.

STEVE'S NO. 2

is the only way to avoid kicking yourself when you overheat the gelcoat and take some of it off. The eraser is the only fool fpoof method that truly does the job without any damage and the resulting additional cost. Been there, done that.

I Was Lucky, I Just Peeled Mine Off

You may be too. But the boat was only 7 years old. The squiggles came right off, wiped with some thinner on a paper towel and I was all done.

Ted, what are you going to use for topside paint

I did this to a 23' kells that I have. I used a topside Urethane. It looked pretty good when done. A fine cell roller is essential along with a good brush for top off. The areas that I brushed came out just so- so. What was somewhat disappointing was that after a year or so, the topside lost alot of the gloss appearance. Has anyone dealt with this before? I have thought about applying wax to see if the gloss appearance would return. Anyone done this?

Acetone, plastic putty knife, and plastic scrubby

worked on the stripes on my '89 Hunter 26.5. These were the original stripes, cracked and UV worn. I tried a heat gun and found out you have to be very careful. Had the best success late in the afternoon after the deck had been heated by the sun. Good music and a cold beer helped maintain the necessary patience. The results are well worth the effort. Wear gloves! Glenn WindWisp

thanks for the info

thanks guys for the info, I will try the Eraser. I plan to use Awlgrip paint. The guy that cleans the bottom of my boat owns three boats and has painted all his boats. He highly recommends awlgrip and says it lasts many many years. I saw his boats and admit they look very good. His oldest boat (morgan) was painted 5 years ago and it still looks great. He roll-n-tipped his paint. I am going to hire him as an consultant/assistant when I haul mine out. I'll keep you posted on how it goes. thanks.. ted

Stripe Tape Removal

I am the operations manager of a large auto body shop and what we have found that works well with no chemical mess is a stripe removal wheel. You can purchace one at your local auto parts store that sells 3M products. The wheel is made of a neoprene type substance and mounts on a high speed drill or die grinder. The wheel will peel off the stripe without damaging your gelcoat. Good Luck, Bert Merrill

I used Steve Dion's method

of the "Eraser," on my 25.5, and it is the superior method (thanks, Steve). Consider trying one of the get coat restorers (New Glass, Poli-Glow, etc.) before you invest in re-painting. PS, has anyone found a source to replace the cabin stripes on a 25.5? I'm one of the few who likes them. Hunter says they don't have the patterns/dimensions.

easy way

The 3M stripe removal wheel mentioned in another posting works well. It removes the stripes and doesn't touch the gelcoat. I know a snowmobile and jet ski dealer and that's all they use to refurbish pin stripes.
