Best way to remove adhesive

I am pulling off the old interior liners and am noticing a thick layer of adhesive on the hull wall. What is the best product to remove this adhesive without gassing myself out of the boat? Non-toxic preferred. Is there a mechanical solution that proves better? Also, is it better to re-line with another material (input desired) or just paint. I think painting is a nice solution but I really like to hear what others have done. Cheers.....

I too had to remove this nasty stuff. I started out trying everything...but I found that the water base stripper worked like butter. I used it on the bottom paint as well. It works great. I will look for the name for you, got it at west marine.Larry On Friday, November 20, 2015 7:03 PM, "alaskaflyfish@... [AlbinVega]" AlbinVega@yahoogroups.com wrote:

Thanks Larry. Did you have trouble with fumes? I used to strip airplanes with metheylene chloride and have become very sensitive to it. There is a product that is a furniture stripper that smells like oranges. I think it can be purchased at Home Depot. Maybe I will try that. Other products like goof off may work too. Let me know what you have tried in the past that didn't work so I wont be chasing may tail. Cheers.

I was told by a rep of the orange stuff that it will dissolve the gelcoat, but there is a water based boat stripper that is ok on the gelcoat and works almost as well. Howard ( ex of Shiva 1707)Sent from my iPad

Hi

I used a scraper, took ages. Relined with carpet
and contact glue. Cheap and looks brilliant, also helps with
condensation.

Cheers

Subject: [AlbinVega] Best way to remove adhesive
I am pulling off the old interior liners and am noticing a thick layer
of adhesive on the hull wall. What is the best product to remove this adhesive
without gassing myself out of the boat? Non-toxic preferred. Is there a
mechanical solution that proves better? Also, is it better to re-line with
another material (input desired) or just paint. I think painting is a nice
solution but I really like to hear what others have done. Cheers.....

I relined my hull with essentially the same as original, except using 1/2" foam insulation. I got marine grade vinyl cloth with adhesive to fix to the hull. The 1/2" foam gave me more insulation, and made sleeping in the v-berth more pleasant. The only trouble I had was trying to glue the foam to the vinyl and hull. Because of the open cell foam, not enough surface is available for the glue. I think a closed cell foam would have been a better choice. I did not attempt to remove the old adhesive. I removed the interior cabinetry before relining. The cabinetry helps secure the liner. Richard

Good morning,  The product you want is called AQUA-STRIP safer marine paint & varnish remover. I got it from West Marine and Jamestown Marine. I tried everything you stated in your e-mail and it didn’t work well at all. The one thing you want to be careful of is if you use the wrong product it will bleed into your fiberglass. The oil base materials will not evaporate and will penetrate into your hull in this case. Not a good idea. Aqua-Strip comes in a one gallon tub, it is green and white tub, and says BACK TO NATURE on it as well. Put it on thick, let it work for a few hours and then take a plastic putty knife and pell the material off. Wipe down with acetone and lightly sand. Due to the age of this glue, there is a high possibility it is asbestos. Keep it wet when sanding, the dust is what will hurt you.  Larry Wills SV-Lilly Too -2761  Sent from Mail for Windows 10    From: alaskaflyfish@... I used to strip airplanes with metheylene chloride and have become very sensitive to it. There is a product that is a furniture stripper that smells like oranges. I think it can be purchased at Home Depot. Maybe I will try that. Other products like goof off may work too. Let me know what you have tried in the past that didn\'t work so I wont be chasing may tail. Cheers.

Thanks for the idea. I had previously thought about marine carpet but I worried about mold growth over time. Have you had any issues with this?

Do you have any issues with mold behind the foam or vinyl? I had thought paint would be easy to clean but you bring up a good point concerning insulation. Any tips on marine grade foam that resists mold growth?

Thanks for the product info. I am looking into getting it shipped to Alaska. I didn't even consider there may be asbestos in the mastic. Thanks for the heads-up. Cheers....

We used 1/2" thick closed cell foam on the hull in the V berth. Glued down with contact cement and then glued marine carpet to that. I'm always fighting mildew but it hasn't been a problem on the carpet.
