I can lash a piece of timber to the mast and then lash the overhang of the furler to it but is there a right (better) and wrong way to do this. The boat is a 26m and the furler a CDI FF2.

How I transport

I have the same furler. To avoid stressing the foil, I tie a rope to the pulpit and then support the drum of my furler at just above deck level (3-4 inches) with a loose loop in the rope. I lash the sail and foil to the side decks with bungees attached to the stanchions. The top end just hangs off of the stern about a foot. So far, my foil shows no signs of stress and the drum doesn't bang around or scratch the deck. Dave s/v Hakuna Matata O'Day 222

PVC trick as well

I use the split PVC trick as well. Takes about 10 minutes to make the cuts with a sabre saw.

I use the wood for now

I will be working on the PVC system, but I have a long list of projects, so for now I use a board. Just make sure it and the furler are VERY secure. The only other option is to disconnect the top of the furler from the mast and pull it back so the mast supports it, but who wants to add time and trouble to their set-up proceedure?

Take drum off.

I have a Catalina 30 with Schaefer furler. When I hauled the boat inland last year I had the drum removed by a rigging shop. I was afraid of all this weight overhanging and getting damaged during my 900 Mile trip over the mountains Unfortunately I was away when they did it so could not see how it was done. This spring I had to figure out how to get it back together. I used the schaeffer manual and was very careful not to lose anything overboard. I used a halyard to act as the forestay while I did the assembly. Bottom line is this. I am much happier now that I know how it comes off and goes on. It looks more complicated than it is. I have found the northern lake sailors that have to unstep their mast every fall are very good at rigging. They seem to understand a lot more about their boats than a lot of coastal sailors that never worry about such things. Take the drum off. Leave foil attached at mast head. You will be able to rest a lot easier. Fair winds Ken

Thanks

For the great ideas none seem to be directly applicable to the 26m but now know exactly what to do. Will post photo when finished but basically will use 1600mm of 50x25 aluminium tubing as a spine and attach a peice of 100mm pvc cut lengthways to the top and two peices of 90mm pvc cut as above and moulded to the shape of mast on the bottom. Also will use short pieces of split 90mm pvc attached to aluminium tubing the same way top and bottom at intervals along mast to hold furler nice and straight on top. Many thanks for the start.
