Henry's

I was there alone, so the cost was not so bad. I found food in Canada to be atrociously high and wondered how Canadians could afford to eat. It would be cheaper just to eat the actual money. I suspect prices, in the summer, go up quite a bit to capture the tourist $. Being an alcoholic is also a financial impossibility in Canada. A case of beer was almost twice the price for the same stuff here in the US. i sure want to get back there. I talked to people who said they drank water straight out of the Bay. I wouldn't try that in L Ontario. Actually, I didn't try it there, either.

Henry's

We must have been to Henry's on a bad day, thought the food was awful and laughed at the people paying to fly there for dinner. Just can't beat the bus at Killarney for fish.

Tastes zre different

I was told how good the fish was at a walk up place a few blocks from the harbor at Little Current and I thought it was awfully greasy and nasty.

Killarney bus

Charlie, you just brought back a memory from long ago (20 yrs. +/-) and the fish and chips from the bus in the harbour in Killarney. Mentioned this to my wife and she said, YES,I remember how good that fish was. I had forgotten all about it but it certainly stuck in her mind. Higgs, Canadain beer is insane $$$ up here, but it's all the taxes we pay for free healthcare etc., but lets not go down the political path on this one. Mind you, American beer is like making love in a canoe, it's f#$%ing near water, so we only have to drink 1/4 the amout. ;)

Higgs - Henry's - also the Cruiser's Net in the North Channel

Higgs - you mentioned Henry's a bit ago - but my wife and I were out enjoying a beautiful day cross country skiing - did over 20km (about 12.5 miles) and right now I feel good. Not sure how we'll feel tomorrow. All those people in the south are missing out on the benefits of having winter! In the 80's we ate at Henry's and enjoyed their pickerel. They were a tad expensive, however given that they are on an island in the middle of no where with a season of about 2 months, I felt it was fine. We haven't eaten there since, mostly because we have no reason to go to the south east end of Georgian Bay. On the other hand, if we are in Killarney we always pick up a fish dinner the school bus at the public dock. The food is good and the price is fine - even though they just have about 2 months to make a profit. It isn't fancy, you have be happy with sitting at a picnic table by the Killarney channel watching the boats go by. In Little Current, I find the Anchor Inn quite decent for fish. There are others that are not so good. The owner of the Anchor Inn hosts the Cruiser's net via VHF (I think it is channel 72) - it is at 0900 daily. It is good way of finding out who is in the North Channel and where as people call in and report their positions as well as anything else that might be interesting to other boaters. It starts off by providing a synopsis of the news of the day and the weather and then goes to call ins.

Henry's South

Henry's is also in the Midland area at Doral Marina, I think open all year. Last year they were at the Toronto Boat show, but not this year.

Great Lakes Cruising Club GLCC

Scott, I've made two trips to the North Channel and found that the GLCC info is well worth the price. As others have mentioned, the charts and chart plotters leave a bit to be desired in the North Channel. GLCC info gives details about hundreds of anchorages and harbors on all of the Great Lakes. GLCC

Thanks Pete, I have looked at the GLCC in the past, but the $$$ of joining vs. what I can get from the Ports guide will be more than enough for now. From what I understand they do have a lot of good information. Maybe after several trips to the North Channel when I run out of anchorages in Ports I'll look at GLCC.

Re GLCC

GLCC is a great organization, only their rendezvous' are too popular and tend to take over the areas that they visit. Also nearby areas are crowded. It is best to know where they will be, and avoid that area. From past experience in the NC.
