Hi All,
We just replaced the old table on our Catalina 30 to a beautiful teak table, but it comes unfinished. When we went to our local chandlery, there are several brands of teak oils out there. Any recommendations?

Thanks,
Mike & Lise

I never found much difference between the choices although some folks I know have their favorite. You might also consider plain lemon oil which doesn't seem to attract dirt like teak oils do.

the wood really doesnt care, as long as its protected by an oil that is meant for wood... I have had the best luck with lemon pledge in the spray can vs the bottle, because its a thicker oil... I spray it on heavy and let it soak in a couple of days and then I wipe it all down and spray it again ... and again until it doesnt uptake any more... then i know the wood is as protected as its going to get without a tarp or shed roof.
it works the same way with the teak on the inside of the boat.

just wiping teak oil on every month or so does NOT give the wood all it should have for the best protection, and it does like a good soaking.
or several applications wiped on every few hours over a multi day period... once you get it soaked up good with oil you can back off a bit, as most teak on older boats has been neglected over the years.
teak needs its oil to maintain its good looks and durability. so a good soaking to restore its lost oils is the best thing you can do for it.

All wood that is outdoors (inside also but may smell for a week or so) will stay in great shape if motor oil is used on it. The linkage/viscosity of motor oil does not break down anymore readily in wood than in engine use. I have a cedar deck that has motor oil saturated within that is 12 years old and the 2x6's have never curled at all. I always apply used motor oil on it. Chief

Creosote clone! Burns great too! And doesn't leave a slick after a rain...

If it were my own boat, I'd want something more durable on that beautiful teak table top than just oil. Teak is hard and won't damage easily but it will damage over time similar to your dining room table.

I'm partial to several coats of tung or teak oil for color followed by four or five coats of a hard, clear varnish like Epifanes Clear Gloss for depth and protection.

This picture shows the difference between oil alone and after varnish applied.

New Catalina's use some sort of polyurethane on their cockpit and cabin tables. They have a woman dedicated to finishing these. And they are gorgeous. Jury is still out on how the cockpit table will hold up as opposed to varnish. We keep it covered though....

When I replaced all the plywood inside my boat, I took the old panel that goes in the front of the v berth and placed it outside on a table. I used tung oil on one half of it every time I saw it or thought about it. I left the other half natural. After two or three months of neglect, both halves were identical...dry and grey. I used it to help start a fire in my outdoor fire pit last night. I took the unused portion to the boat with the intent of sprucing up the outside teak. I think I'll just trash it and find something else.

Crane: Before trashing that teak panel, just put motor oil on it and see what it looks like after a few months. You won't believe it. Chief
