I am a former Hobie sailor who is looking for a monohull boat that is fast, fun and easy to rig. I winnowed my choices down to the Vanguard Zuma and the Catalina 12.5 expo. The Zuma seems to be a classic sail trim rig and the Expo is a Hoyt boom with carbon fiber mast. The Expo looks like it would be the fastest to rig and easiest to manage. I understand that Vanguard used to sell hoyt boom setups but dosen't anymore. I am looking for any feedeback you all can give me on the choices I've made, issues that I should be aware of , sailing qualities of these boats and any other input you might have . Thanks in advance.

Why Monohull?

Why not stay with two hulls - for SPEED! A Nacra 5.5 Uni? [single handed catamaran] If a monohull - I'd want to get a Laser - again SPEED - and the availability of smaller sails if you need that to match your weight. I don't see how the others could really be easier to rig - but then I have sailed Lasers, not the other two - but a Laser is sooo easy - - - OTH: If you are getting a bit older, as I am, then the boats you mention would be more stable.

Monohull

I am not getting any younger either which is why i got out of the Hobie. Unfortunately I have never sailed any of these boats which is why I am asking for opinions. The Laser has a narrower beam and 10 more squar feet of sail so it will be faster but is has the standard sail rigging with downhaul, outhaul, vang etc. Check out the 12.5 Expo at www.catalinayachts.com It seems to have a bigger cockpit than a laser, unique sail rig thast allows roller reefing the main around the mast and an interesting boom design. It looks like the easiest rig to set up that I have ever seen. I am trying to figure out the downside. Thanks for your help. Bob
