Shields Poly X hose with a "lifetime warranty" is the most expensive. Then comes OdorSafe and next is a "premium rubber" followed by "Super PVC." There are a lot of products to chose from.
trident premium hose for my new head. several people have recommended it. its pretty thick which helps with permeation. no problem using pvc. you won't have any permeation problem with it. i think some people don't recommend it because with the boat moving all over, they are afraid it could crack since it's not flexible.
I've found a retailer who sells it for <%6/ft: Blue Water Ship's Store in Foley, AL., at just over $5/foot. Ask for Scott and tell him that a friend of Larry Brown sent you. BWSS was originally out of Corpus and Galveston but they spun off the Foley operation and they don't yet have a web site. Phone is 251.943.4179 And btw, Trident 101/102 (same hose, just different colors) is the only sanitation hose I recommend these days. (Sorry, but AVS96 is no longer available.) It's a double walled rubber hose that has a biocide in the rubber formula...and the ONLY hose about which I've yet to hear of a single case of odor permeation failure in the 5-6 years it's been on the market....something I cannot say about SeaLand "OdorSafe." David, you've obviously limited your searching for marine products to the WM catalog. We gotta teach you how to find the good stuff at places who sell it for prices that actually make sense!
