what is considered the best route to the chesapeake bay from nyc? does anyone have an idea how long the trip might take for solo sailor?

Clay

Eric, I'm going with you

also waiting for some help on the route. If I am not mistaken, we go south about 300nm, I just don't know the angle or how far offshore we should be. I can do 95nm in a day, so it would probably take us 3 days none stop.

How big is your boat and when do you plan to do it

I traveled last may from Annapolis to Liberty Landing marina in NJ on our h46. It took us 4 days up and 4 days down as follows: Day 1 Annapolis to C& D canal Day 2 C& D canal to Cape May NJ Day 3 Cape May NJ to Bernagat Inlet Day 4 Manasquan Inlet to Hoboken/Jersey City (NY Harbor) Our plan was to do 50 miles or so a day. Our return trip was slighly different as we wanted to got to Atlantic City: Day 1 NY Harbor to Manasquan Inlet due to weather - there is a rairoad bridge that could limit acces to marinas and there is no place to anchor outside the rr bridge Day 2 Manaquan Inlet to Atlantic City Day 3 Atlantic City to C& D canal very long day 11-12 hours Day 4 C& D Canal to Annapolis

Where

If you want to go to the northern bay go down the Jersy coast, up the Delaware river, thru the C&D canal and into the Bay. For southern Bay, bypass the Delaware and enter the Bay at the entrance. Allan

NY TO ???

I did this same trip last year, and am doing it again this fall. Will have my girlfriend with me, so not single handing. We will be leaving Sandy Hook on Oct. 8 or 9. (If all goes well.) It is better to make the run to Cape May non stop, as the inlets along the Jersey coast are not too kindly at times. There are places to duck into in needed. Atlantic City is probably the best, but it too can get nasty. The only way to get there from NY is down the Jersy Coast, as far as Cape May, then you have a choice of going on offshore, to the lower Chesepeak, or up the Deleware and through the C&D canal. If your time is compatible, might be able to do some buddy boating. We will be on a Seidelman 37. Phil Prater

BEST ROUTE

I did this trip last April in a Hunter 380. We ran non stop from the tip of Long Island to Deltaville in 2 days and 7 hours. Our course was staight to the entrance of the Bay from Long Island. Be sure to take plenty of warm clothes and have radar. Let us hear from you after the trip. Good luck!

How far offshore

Clay, Not sure how far off we are going to go. Have been told that currents are more favorable a little farther offshore, but will have to check on that. At least far enough to make a arrow straight run to Norfolk weather permitting. Lots will depend on the weather forecasts when ready to leave. Plans are to take a day and make New York to view Statue of Liberty. Be a new experience for my girlfriend and sort of a short shakedown. Then anchor up at Sandy Hook, and head out the following morning. Happy Birthday Phil

Must be one hell of a fast boat, and you must have a very good racing crew. From the tip of Long Island to Norfolk is a little over 350 miles, and if memory serves it is another couple of days via the ICW to Deltaville.

I did that trip at seven knots - details

day 1 Annapolis to C&D canal, stayed at Deleware City Marina just west of where the canal meets the river. about a ten hour day day 2 Delaware city to Cape May Canal. Stayed at Utches Marina and recommend it. Another ten hour day Day 3 - the longest and worst day for me. Cape Inlet to Manasquan took all of fourteen hours and used all the daylight there was in July. Consider stopping at Atlantic City to break it up. Off shore in NJ just use your depth finder and stay in about 20' of water (less than a mile off shore) Day 4 - Easy run up to NY city but I kept going up the Hudson to Lake Champlain

Hey Eric

Sounds like maybe we can meet up and buddy boat. I can hold off a day or so on my deptarture. Hope to leave Keyport on the 9 or 10th, but nothing is set in stone. I have to go offshore as far as Cape May. Not sure about your boat, but there is a fixed bridge just S of Atlantic City with 35' clearance. No way I can make that. From Cape May to Norfolk will be dependant on the weather, either offshore run or up the Deleware. Inside will add at least a day, more than likely two. But would be nice to have another boat along. My girlfriend and I will arrive Keyport on the 5th, and I will give you a call after we arrive, and have an idea of departure date. Phil
