We recently bought a beautiful 1985 222, but have chronic problems with our (original) roller furling fouling. If we wanted to replace the whole shebang (I know, lots of people are telling me to just futz with fittings and so forth up on the headstay, and we just might end up going that route), but if we were to replace it, does anyone have a favorite "typical" replacement o'day roller furling brand/model? Thanks!

furling system

I had same problems with my system on my O'Day 28. I replaced the unit with a Harken and I have been well satified. Before I made the choice I spoke with the riggers at my lake and they told me they had the least problems with the Harkens System. They said the the schaffer system was also very reliable. The system I replaced after 17 years was a CDI. Must say something for that system too. Good Luck

CDI

I think the CDI would be one of the best and economical choices AS LONG AS YOU GET THE BALL BEARING OPTION.

To Russ

Russ, I have a CDI furling system on my'86 ODay 272. The foils and furling lines are original equipment and I'm content with them. A couple of years ago I replaced the old split furling drum with the flexible furler drum, but didn't buy the bearing kit. Have you used your CDI furler with and without the bearing? Sometimes I have to arm-wrestle to furl the (oversized) genny in a blow, and my mate won't even try. Does the bearing make a great improvement over the delrin bushing? I would definitely consider the upgrade if I thought it would make it easier for my mate to furl the genny. Tom

Back to Tom

I haven't used it on mine yet, but have used it on a Catalina (30 if I remember). The primary reason I'm replacing it is because my sail won't unfurl the last turn or so in lighter airs. The ball bearing eliminates that. When furling on the Catalina (but not in heavier winds), I thought it made a distinct difference. My mate also does not furl at all, but heavier winds may still make it difficult, it's just that the BB eliminates alot of friction from the delrin bearing. I'm docked at Sandusky Harbor Marina (A16). If you want to stop by some time, feel free. I am in around memorial day, but will likely be in a bit earlier this year. rkmarcks@operamail.com Russ

Oday 222 Light Furler

Bob, I have an '84 Oday 222 that has what I belive to be an original Schafer furler. In the begining I had the same problem with getting the last few inches out of my little 110%. After review I finally determined that the previous owner had replaced the original line with something to big. I threw a smaller line in and now it unfurls all the way. When I pull it in the sheets wrap around several times. Dan
