Allan/Dan... When you switched from the 1/4" fuel line did you replace any connectors on either the fuel tank or engine? I ordered new 5/16" fuel line to replace the 1/4". Thanks.. Jon

Jon,

I swapped the hose barb at the fuel tank to 5/16". That was because I bought a 5/16
" squeeze bulb. The fittings that came with my Racor were also 5/16". I will have to look at how I got from the Racor to whatever is next. We sailed (well motored) over to San Francisco this am for the long weekend. We're currently at lunch at Grumpy's so stand by.

Jon, its 5/16" all the way through the Racor and down to the mechanical lift pump. Looks like the hose fit right on the existing fitting on the pump. You should be able to find the one for the fuel tank at your local Ace Hardware.

Hose fittings...

I can't recall what size fittings I used, but, being somewhat lazy, I believe I just used the sizing that was already there as I don't recall making any size changes when I fit the bulb and vacuum gage "T" into the line between the Racor and the lift pump.

Thank You Allan, Dan and everyone as usual for sharing your knowledge! I'm not only ready to redo my fuel line, I'll be doing it better with your input.... Alan was that Grumpy's the bar.. If I remember they had some pretty good burgers! Hope you enjoyed the day!

Hello,
I would like to chime in since I have a few questions of my own.
I have a valve at the top of the tank. Will shutting that essentially perform the same function as an inline stop-cock you're describing?
I unfortunately installed the squeeze bulb near the tank, since I had to replace dried hose at the valve end. It is awkward to use and I can't see fuel leak at a bleed screw, so it may have caused problems by enthusiastic use (how firm is firm?).
I think a pressure gauge installed downstream of the fuel filter will indicate the differential pressure caused by the resistance of the fuel filter to fuel flow, since most gauges are referenced to atmospheric pressure by their construction. I would change my filter if it showed a 5 psi differential. I don't think I will do this since changing the filters happens annually on my boat, due to the amount of trust I have in the quality of marine diesel available.
I still need to install an access port on my tank for cleaning and a fuel level indicator. I have some ideas I want to consider before moving ahead.

Shutting the hard to reach valve at the top of the tank will turn off the flow of fuel. Be aware there is still a fuel line ( and filters etc) full of fuel between the valve and the motor. It will run out if you remove anything lower than the tank- ie filter etc

I haven't had fuel run out when changing filters. Hydraulic lock?
