I'm trying to find a small (2-3hp)used outboard. I'm building a dingy that is rated for up 3hp. Tried all the usuals like ebay, yahoo, etc. Most of the ones listed are about 40 years old--no joke. Any ideas would be great. Thanks

try your local marina

There is always somebody out there looking to move up, but need to get rid of their old motor first. Most people upgrade to either a bigger motor, a 2 to 4 cycle, up to an alternator or electric start, and would be happy to part with their functioning motor in exchange for money towards their upgrade. Post a message on the message board at the local marina or yacht club and hope for the best. I for example have a suzuki 5hp 2 cycle and need to move to a 4 cycle due to new lake regulations.

Don't know where Kemah is but......

The Sunday issue of the Washington Post always has a bunch of outboards for sale in the Sports section classifieds. I imagine papers in large cities have the same. David

eBay!

You can find several small outboards on eBay. Just search for the brand name plus the outboard in the search (ie. nissan outboard). You wil find several listings. Good luck. Brooks

Nautical Swap Meets

If you are in an area that has nautical swap meets, they should be a good source. I know that the ones I've been to here in northern CA always seem to have one or two. Also, try posting some "Wanted" ads at local marinas and yacht clubs. I agree that 40 yrs old is too old, but I wouldn't balk at a 10-15 yr old one that has had fairly light use (as most will have had).

Boat dealers....

...I found my 9.9 Tohatsu electric start with remote by calling around to local power boat dealers. It was a trade in. Came off one of those Mac26mx things. Got it for $800 because it didn't have a tiller (perfect). Be persistant, call all boat dealers and marine outboard mechanics within 100 miles of your area.

Cruise 'n' Carry

They have not been made for years but you can still get a brand new one and parts via the Internet. Just Google it. Around $400. Mine is nearly twnety years old and runs like new. Noisy little bugger though.
