Not a fan of West Marine for cordage as they sell *only* NER, specifically Sta-Set X which I abhor.
These pics are from my latest experience with pulling Sta-Set X halyards. Each coil (as shipped from WM) was gently untied and laid directly into a plastic tub, loose end up. The SSX core is so stiff and so dissimilar to the casing that it makes its own hockles with no need for any outside assistance. It makes for 8 or 10 round trips from masthead to exit plate for each run (about 900 feet of walking each time). This is NOT a rope I want on my boat.
I have Yale UULS, got at a WM closing of a former-BoatUS store. It's marvelous-- and has less stretch that SSX, comparable to Samson XLS which I regard as the gold standard for cruising-yacht cordage. (WM won't carry either; see Defender for Sampson and Fawcett's or APS for Yale.)
BTW Dave at Eggers' is currently doing my splicing.
I won't neglect to mention that the C44 customer did not specify any colors so ALL the halyards are white with red fleck! There seven halyards in a C44 mainmast alone! I'm raising my rates the next time I have to face this! :naughty:
