I need to replace some lines on my Catalina. I would like to go to a local chandlery instead of West Marine.
Any suggestions in the South Jersey / Barnegat bay area where the prices are reasonable?
Thanks

Are you talking dock lines or running rigging?
In Barnegat there is The Boat Place but they don't have much sailing related.

Why not Defender.com? Any orders I place before noon one day are delivered by end of the next day.
If you need them to do any splicing it might take a day or two longer.

I sail out of Barnegat and WM Tuckerton is about the only place with sailing specific type lines I have found.

Cedar Creek Marina in Bayville is a sailing marina and has a store. Not sure what they carry. Might give them a call. They looked well stocked but were closed the weekend I took my ASA 101 class early May a couple of years ago.

Consider this site. Good prices/service. It also helps support this site.

LE,
If you are looking for made up running rigging, then try the running rigging calculator on this site, as recommended by Chris and Steve.
Other on line sites really need for you to tell them exactly what you need.

Happy Fourth!

I've found that West Marine has lower prices than any of the other local stores in NJ so I really don't see what's so funny or objectionable about shopping at WM. That said, you can't go wrong by shopping for your running rigging right here on this site.

Buy them right here at Sailboat Owners. You will get New England Ropes. Sta-Set double braid is good?

Thanks,
Andrew

trade-offs

I just wanted to give the local chandleries the business. I buy plenty at W M.
I know what you mean ... there are advantages to a good local marine store. I often go to Lockwoods because they have far more product selection and superior knowledge. But it opened my eyes when they sold me a quart of Interlux Perfection for $15 more than the price at WM which is literally right next door. They are more expensive for sure.

I often think that WM would better serve their customers if they provided more sophisticated service and more product selection by consolidating (having fewer stores). That said, I have stopped in at the store at Exit 105 GSP on several occasions just because it is a convenient location during my frequent travels down the Parkway.

I shop at both. I've learned over the years that you need to comparison shop as not everything at Lockwoods is more expensive. But even if it were, the small premium is worth the quality and expertise that comes with that family-owned business. As much as I also like WM, I would sorely miss the loss of Lockwoods tenfold.
For major purchases, I shop the Internet and while Defender typically comes up fairly often as the low price leader, I've gotten better deals on some items from iBoats, Downwind Marine, and others. Since I have Amazon Prime, the cost of shipping figures into my comparisons as that can be a hefty price to pay especially if you're just trying to buy one or two small items. A lot of these places have a minimum shipping price of $6-$8 which is crazy if the part you want costs $2.

There have been a lot of calls for West Marine in this thread. If you aren't going with the SBO store here, I think the next choice should be Annapolis Performance Sailing, http://www.apsltd.com ESPECIALLY if you want higher tech, better performing line than Sta-set.

APS sends orders to me outside Philadelphia next day. Should be same to NJ, although splicing will take longer than next day.

Then again, I don't believe in using polyester double braid line for any halyard...

Scott, I hear you. Down in DE, there is the New Castle store, which is bigger, and then less than 5 miles down the road is the Bear, DE store, which is smaller. So I was talking to the New Castle store manager this weekend (he used to be a professional sail racer, until he had kids) and he told me that both stores are profitable.

He says it's likely that the 2 stores will be consolidated within the next 3 years into a mega-store (Yay, mega-store! That means more high margin clothing, less actually useful stuff!) He also said that they are closing the Northeast, MD store and the Havre de Grace store. That's brilliant! There will be NO stores above Baltimore on the northern Chesapeake, Eastern or Western shore.

Yes, retail is tough. And brick and mortar stores are expensive to keep going. But seriously? Seems those guys have strategy issues sometimes...

As much as we rail against WM, the fact is, it's good to have them around. Sometimes you just need something stat. And some of the West Marine branded products are nice. This weekend I got an extendable pole deck brush which can be swapped out for a boat hook attachment. Winning! Of course, I still can't buy a Harken Micro single with becket in store...

Eggers Sailmakers

Dave Thompson, Jr. (whose dad was THE Hunter dealer who sold my boat, when new, and many others in the '70s) is still running Eggers Sailmakers (the original 1970s Hunter sails supplier) in South Amboy; but not for long. He carries NER and several others. He also does double-braid splicing and standing-rigging swaging. Call him before he closes the shop for good!

(Tell him I sent you :))
