With regard to the weight I was thinking about potential damage to the transom. I don't know what the turning ability of the motor would be within the motor well.

I'm almost 59 too! lol

The charging capacity of the Honda sounds like a big plus. Cumberland Water Sports has a 8hp 20" shaft, 98lbs, for $2649.00 delivered to my door, no tax, free shipping, to my door.

But now with all the good input you guys have provided, I'm considering the 25" shaft. A Honda 25" increases the price to $2853.00 and weight to 107lbs.

Spending less is a good thing, I just don't want to say latter; I wish I would've gotten that other motor.

Decisions - decisions...

...I just leave mine on all the time (even trailering)....
Same here as I get a younger helper to come over to the house and put it on for me before I leave...

... about 7000 miles now with it back there and the Honda 8 HP before that for another 3000-4000 miles with no problems but I've also added a third bunk back there since buying the Tohatsu so the boat no longer has all of that overhang from the second bunk back. I also use a large black bungee at the bottom of the outboard going to the third bunk that helps keep the motor from moving some.

If you can't find someone with the same motor so you know ahead of time about the turning in the well, if that is important to your situation, I think I'd spend the extra couple hundred as it might give you more options like what Walt and I have explored. I think the newer Yamaha's have the same turning problem??

I have a 2010 Nissan/Tohatsu 9.8 XL shaft with electric start and its been good so far, no problems. I don't bother looking for special gas, just always use Seafoam and Stabil and have not had any problems.

However, another poster here (Katana? I think) bought that outboard and thought it was too loud and vibrated too much. I don't know if he got the same prop that mine came with (four blade 5 pitch) but I really didn't like that prop, it was like being stuck in four wheel drive low all the time.. you had to run it at too high of rpm where it was obnoxious. The prop Ive been using is the three blade about 8 pitch which I have been happy with.

If you get that 5 pitch four blade prop.. be prepared to buy a different prop unless your only using it to get in and out of a slip or dock.

I was somewhat under the impression that you had to buy directly from a dealer to get a Honda??
Ya that was me. 9.9 extra long shaft... I cant say I have the problem fixed for sure. I have to try it on my sailboat when the ice is gone. I really think I just got a little unlucky. I may still buy a yamaha but Tohatsu was absolute great to work with and very helpful. They even let me take the motor to a mercury/yamaha dealer for repair work. They said the problem was a lean fuel mixture. The issue I have is odd and I would guess very difficult to find if adjusting the carb didnt work. Im crossing my fingers. I bought the motor from onlineoutboards.ca (probably no difference) as well. No problems. My biggest problem I had or mistake was Im not at all close to a tohatsu dealer and I haven't found an outboard to compare with. That would be very easy then I could defintly say its not my boat. I was very disappointed with my motor....but Im quite happy with Tohatsu the company. Search the internet its pretty hard to find unhappy Tohatsu owners. Sure it would be great if they said sorry about your motor here is a new own.....but that would be unrealistic and certainly not something I would expect. The motor vibrates and is loud is a pretty subjective complaint. It is... but tough to prove and Im quite sure not a typical problem. I give them full marks for not blowing me off.

It wasnt the prop causing the issue but I did go to the seven pitch prop as well. Actually I love the motor when it has no prop...but not very effective.

just a side note. I bought a motor mount to see if it would stop my outboard from making my teeth chatter. It did help but even if I go for a yamaha i will keep it. I like it quite a bit better than having the motor in the well.
