Call the other person on their phone. Yes, you will use minutes. We've done this on few jobs where one person is inside the boat and the other outside when replacing through hulls. Saves a lot of yelling and miscommunication.

Three of my last five days involved "No service" locations. Not to mention $10/day international roaming in Canada (maybe, next year)...

Slightly off topic, check out ATT's service plan. We have one with unlimited data and free calling in US, Mexico, and Canada. It is more than the basic plan we had with the $10/day international plan.
