Stirring things up a little

What is your favorite drink to go along with a day of sailing. Give me your opinions, if you disagree with having a drink while your out there thats great too. Tell us why. I don't believe in being drunk behind the wheel but when about 3 comes around a cold one hits the spot! One of my favorite times during the summer is a coctail out on the water around summertime. Especially with good friends while your on the hook!

Iced tea while at the wheel, Margaritas after

I think it's safe to say we're well beyond the era when people can be drinking anything alcoholic while operating the vessel. If you don't think so, see how much of your lifestyle you'll have left when you don't pass the breathalyzer. So my favorite drink while navigating is my homemade iced tea: make a lot of strong tea with your favorite tea bags and add sugar and lots of lemon. Memorize the proportions that please you and drink it by the gallon if it's hot out, it can only be good for you. After anchoring I like my homemade margaritas, which are helped considerably by having a hand-crank slushee machine on board for the ice. recipe: squeeze in one lime, 3 parts tequila, one part Cointreau, splash of Tonic water (not seltzer), splash of lime gatorade or pink lemonade. rub a lime peel around the rim of the glass and roll the edge in Margarita salt (the big crystals). Toss the lime peels in the glass, grind the ice slush on top, and pour the drink into it. Ahhhh...

Rum Swizzle

Well when we bought "Rum Swizzle" our Catalina 30- the name the PO chose grew on us. So when on the hook we do enjoy a Rum Swizzle or two. The story goes like this: back in the day of wooden sailing vessels the crew was awarded a pint of beer for every day at sea until it ran out or went bad due to the lack of refrigeration. When Englishmen discovered Rum in the Caribbean they liked the fact that it did not need refrigeration but a pint per sailor would take them out of commission. They decided to water down the rum (called grog) but that killed the taste. They added citrus but that became to bitter. Sugar was the final ingredient to sweeten the mixture to what eventually evolved into the modern day "Rum Swizzle"....our Catalina 30. I'll have one beer with lunch while out sailing, once on the hook or back in the marina, a good rum (Gooslings) on the rocks with a lime twist. dave..

Best drink for sailing

While the anchor is up - water. After it's down - A glass of champagne. Then, a Painkiller, or a Dark 'n' Stormy, or any rum with any fruit juices for that matter. Then a beer, Stella Artois preferred in warmer climates, Guinness is cooler ones. Then a shot of tequila. Repeat. End the evening with a nice single malt.

A Caesar

Only when you and your boat are firmly attached to something relatively stable. Vodka (we use gin, personal preference) single or double (depending on the glass or your attitude at the moment), a heavy dash of worchester, a "glub" of lemon juice, tabasco to your taste, celery salt and add clamato, leaving room for ice. Mix it, add ice, another sprinkle of celery salt, and garnish with a celery stalk (it helps get your daily veggie requirement)or a jumbo chilled shrimp properly seasoned. Andy "Baroque"

Sailing Pleasure

Sailing is to enjoy the wind in your face, the waves slaping at the hull, the fresh outdoors and you can enjoy all this while drinking a beer. Marine patrols in our area do not stop sailboats, they figure we do not exceed the speed and it is to much work to bring us about. Beer while navigating, Mount Gay rum and coke at anchor. Water is for under the hull.

Ths Captain's always aboard!

Beer good. Rum great! My favourite is Captain Morgan Deluxe and coke. Yet again, I can't disagree with any of the other favourites.

Be prepared for all guest

Bellini's a crowd favorite, but normally other than a full cooler of beer, my galleys prepared for all guests- bacardi rum, kalua (great with coffee), johnny blue, and clorox.

As sailing goes....

As we sail only water, any type of fruit juice or Ice tea. As long as I am the skipper, NOBODY in MY boat consumes alcohol as we are out sailing. At anchor Margaritas or Rum & Coke and even a good Cabernet will do !

Harbinger of summer

Forget the twittering of little birds. I know summer's here when I can hear the tinkling of ice cubes in a gin & tonic. When the hook is down & the sun is out, that is. When sailing, anything more than maybe a single beer with lunch is asking for grief & perhaps a crash course in a MOB exercise to boot. After dark.....tradition says rum, but I prefer a nice Merlot with dinner (can't afford the good Cabernet) and sure....a single malt or Grand Marinier nightcap please.

There is no best drink,

for a day of sailing!! There is nothing finer then sailing all day, and into the evening, and even into the night. Nothing tops it, early morning coolness, thru afternoon high temps.,sun baked to evening, with cooling temps, and a calming wind, its the best. However, the perfect end, is a few of my favoite brews, followed by my favorite Capt. and coke. Only after on hook, though.

Don't drink and sail.

But when the hooks down??? Just a few cold Victoria Bitters followed by several and several more Bunderburg Rums. Yummo!

Boat drinks

Boat drinks come out at the dock for us. When they do one favorite is Coconut rum and diet lime coke. Of course on those really hot days an ice cold beer do the trick.!
