Hurricane Marty smashed all my stainless on my Cat 30. Got new pulpits and stanchions from Catalina and will replace all. What is the best caulking/sealant to use as I install the new stainless? Thanks.

The old 4200/5200 debate

Hello Jack, There are a ton of threads in the archives about this. I just looked at them yesterday. I am going to rebed some stanchions in the next few weeks. After reading all the commemnts I found, I am going to use 4200. Check out the archives, the debate made great reading. Just do a search for stanchions, or use the links below. Best of luck, Jack Bollinger

Thanks

Thanks Jack. I was hoping for a definitive answer, but the responses were entertaining! I have used many different caulks/sealants, but wanted to avoid the Lifecaulk type as it seems to attach itself to everything and anything, fellow boaters take to the sea to get away from a boater using it. It works great though. Is 4200 or 101 more user friendly?

3M 4200

I have used 3M's 4200 many times. It is easy to use and remains flexible so the seals doesn't break. Do not use 5200 on any thing that you would ever want to disassemble. When you use the 4200, clean both the area where you're going to bed the object, and the object. Take some masking tape and cover an area larger than your pulpit bases. Dry fit the pulpit, then trace the bases with a pencil. Remove the pulpit and use a razor knive to trim around the line you drew. Remove the tape where the bases will sit. Apply the 4200 per the instructions and attach your pulpit. After you've slightly tightened the hardware, allow the 4200 to set. Then tighten further. Trim around the bases with your razor knife. Then remove the masking tape and all of the excess 4200 that squeezed out will come off. Nothing else left to do!
