The B&G autopilot on my Hunter 420 fell out of commissioning and won't accept a new commissioning (won't accept rudder parameters). A tech is working on it but it may be necessary to get a new one. What are the best/better brands?

I LOVE my Autohelm!

I've had my Autohelm 3000 for 10 years now and have only had 2 issues with it in those years..both involved returneing it to the factory for excellent service. If I had to do it again, I;d move up to the Autohelm 4000, though.

Try an archive search on

ST4000 (Autohelm) and Simrad. You'll have lots of reading to answer your question. For a larger boat like yours, however, you'll need to consider more robust units, like the ST6000 and other vendors, like Alpha and Roberts for below deck drive units. All sorts of people have had all sorts of issues with autopilots. Your choice to get a less robust unit, or start considering "professional grade" units.
