I would like to get my husband a small BBQ for his Catalina 22 for Father's Day. Do you have a recommendation of a style/brand/size that works best for your family?

Not much choices, but we've been using a Magma propane BBQ for several years now. You can remove the center heat deflector and also use it as a stove, like the one photo shows, making a breakfast skillet while on the hook one weekend. Not cheap, and you need to buy the mounts separately. Check online for the best price.

What a wonderful wife, wonder what I'm going to get for Father's Day?

In boating, there simply is no "best" - it's all a compromise.

As far as BBQs, we've done it all.

C22 - Hibtachi! Yup! n our Mark I we made the dinette bed extender, so used that piece of plywood to span the cockpit and grilled on the hibatchi. Great steaks in the 80s. With that size boat, we enjoyed what we could and what we could afford. Ours was like a big tool box: with a latching cover. Once closed, the hibatchi would extinguish the charcoal and we ended up using the same briquettes a few times.

C25 - Charcoal Magma. PITA. The round one. Not half as easy as the hibatchi.

Current boat: green bottle propane round Magma party size, works great, came with the boat.

If I was to choose now, I'd get a rectangular rail mounted propane BBQ. Much more intuitive to use - the shape - and the round ones are larger than necessary for the same amount of USABLE grilling surface, easier to use, more like the shape of your home BBQ, right?. We have a CNG stove, so have to use the green cans, not an issue.

I second what CaptDon said ... Magma "kettle", original 15" size. Worth every penny!

They all work better with lava rock in them. Retains the heat, blocks wind. Chief

I have a full sized BBQ I got at Lowe's. I run it inside the cabin. Instead of charcoal I burn the dead bodies of ants from the ant infestation I found in my boat. The infestation that is apparently in my hull. -_-

Seriously though-Talked to a guy with a compac 19 who swears by charcoal only. Fire? I asked. He said the BBQ was always downwind so no big deal...

C-22......Force 10, small size. Cooks slow, great for chickens. Not great for steaks.
C-270,...Magma Kettle. Very hot, great for steaks, sux for chicken.
C-385....Same Magma. Too boat poor for new grill. :(

We went for a Coleman propane 2 burner. Available everywhere for $70 or so. Built a table and then used the easy mount for a common marine bbq that costs 300 or more. It was easy to install. Took out the useless sliding galley and built a custom cubby for the grill, bottle, table and pillar, and for the hatchboards. Pics attached (with luck)....

What year Catalina 22 does he have ?

Our "New Style" boat came with a propane Kuuma Stow n Go bbq that mounts to the top pushpit rail.
I haven't used it on the boat yet, but I tested it on land for a steak dinner, and it worked well enough.

Not cheap to buy though.

I'm not a fan of those small disposable gas bottles, but I found that one of the small 5lb refillable propane bottles will JUST fit beside the fuel tank in the fuel locker .

As "Chief" says, using lava rock or ceramic briquettes with almost any gas BBQ is a good way to improve it.

The Kuumma is also available as charcoal stove

EDIT: I should mention that I tested it in the cockpit of the boat, and it was out of the way, but very usable.
