I am sure that this topic has been discussed before, if so I apologize ahead of time: however; I have recently joined this forum. I am the proud owner of a 1984 Oday 222. When I purchased her, she had a 12 volt automotive battery with a battery charger attached. What is the best battery application? Do I just replace the battery with a marine battery or a dry cell of some sort? I want at the minimum to use my running light and marine radio. Thanks for any suggestions.

A typical car battery is not designed to be discharged as occurs on a sailboat in which the engine/alternator is not constantly charging it. Your best bet is a decent deep cycle battery or 2 - 6V golf cart batteries wired in series and a marine 3 stage charger which is worth the extra cost as your battery will last a lot longer.

Red,
If you have a charging unit on your outboard as I do on my Johnson 8 hp, you can buy a deep cycle 100 Amp hour battery which should take care of your VHF and autopilot. I don't use my running lights much anymore since I retired. My favorite battery is a Delco Energizer deep cycle 100 AH.

I recently modified my battery box to accept the larger size (200 amp hour) Interestate Marine Deep Cycle battery (about $140) including the box. I do not have a charging system on my 6 HP Johnson (1973) OB. So far, So good - Even with about 10 Hrs. on the auto pilot, radio, Depth and Speed... I will be applying a battery charge indicator this weekend. Charging from home dock when needed.

That's got to be a heavy battery. What's it weigh? A battery that size should work for you with no problem.
I try to keep my power consumption to a minimum.
My autopilot really doesn't use a lot of power and I only use my radio when I want to get in touch with the bridge tender on the river.
I removed my cabin dome lights and installed battery operated LED lights in their place. At night I'll light one of two scented candles when I'm in a protected cove on the hook.
A few years ago I replaced my outboard charging wire with a #10 copper stranded duplex marine cable. I have it running through an existing outlet hole in the inside transom, to a terminal connector mounted on the inside bulkhead under the lazarett cover. I don't like those cheap, made in China marine electric outlets and plugs that they sell at Worst Marine. They're OK for plugging in a VHF radio but not for putting power into a house battery. The termination board is far more superior to a cheap marine electric outlet with tiny screw terminals. The term board is as good as going direct to the battery, I think.

Nothing to add about the battery, just noticed that your home port is sheriden arkansas. have you sailed ouachita or maumelle yet. We sailed Maumelle last week end, very hot spotty wind, had fun just the same, just wondering if you had an opinion about the lakes around central arkansas.

I have sailed Quachita, DeGray and Lake Hamilton. I kept my boat at Brady Mountain Marina on Quachita until the water level got so low that my keel was on the bottom. Ever since then I had her on the trailer. I have been toying with renting a slip at the Jolly Roger Marina on Lake Maumelle. Lake Hamilton had to many power boats for the size of the lake. I enjoyed sailing on both both DeGray and Quachita. The best thing about Lake Quachita is the size of the lake. The biggest drawback is the many sallow areas in the lake. While these areas are clearly marked, I still have wandered into them. This probably would not be an issue with your Widgeon. DeGray should be an excellent choice for day sailing. Would you recommend Maumelle on a good day?

It would be if I had a beautiful young lady to share it with, but my wife won't let me have a girlfriend. :)

All kidding aside, the scented candles provide a certain amount of light and they also make the cabin smell fresh.

Joe, Not sure of weight on battery, maybe 20% more? I will be looking into changing cabin lights to LED's next season (Christmas present) - RE: recent Sail Mag. article. Also, candles are nice; but, I do miss the old gimbled oil lamps from Dad's 30' MKII Islander (Sea Hawk) (1971).

I had a gimbled oil lamp in my boat for years John and I burned kerosene but the head liner started turning black and brass always needs to be clean up. I removed the oil lamp a few years ago.
LED cabin lights are the way to go even if you wire them in.
They don't use much power and the light is pretty good.
