Berthing in Bermuda

General question for everyone out there. Heading to Bermuda in May and have been trying to find a slip for our boat while we are there in St Georges. Having a heck of a time getting anyone to respond to Email along with figuring out where the marinas are located in the harbor. Winder if anyone has any recommendation of where to slip that is walking distance to the town and supplies. Would like to have shower facilities, fuel, and laundry facilities if possible. Thanks for the info!

I believe that you can Berth along the wall for free. As you enter the harbor, go past the customs building, there in the starboard side is dockage. Plenty of room to anchor as well.

When you check in at Ordinance Island they may let you lay along side, either at the customs dock or the other docks close by. Have fender boards ready. The harbor master's office is right there, just east of the customs office. If you need fuel, you will need to go out around Ordinance Island to the fuel dock just to the east. You can also buy water there for 20 cents a gallon when I was there two years ago. If you need a slip with water and electric then the St Georges Dinghy Club, just inside and to the north of Governor's Cut would be a good place to hang. They also have showers and food there. The town square also has bathrooms with hot and cold salt water but no showers. Dumpsters are on the dock right next to where the ferry comes in. It is a short walk to pick up a bus and ferry pass that will take you anywhere on the island. The grocery is about a block back from the water front and has all the basics, including rum. The local bananas are the little ones on the floor. They also have an excellent buffet set out for breakfast or dinners. Some great selections of fine food that you buy by the pound. They will also get you block ice if you ask ahead of time. There is no water or electric if you decide to dock right down town and it is kind of busy.

I anchored out and it was very nice with lots of room and a short dinghy ride into the town square. It is a bit of a walk from the dinghy club. I would take a daily dinghy ride out behind Higg's Island, by the cut, for my snorkel and bath, then ride back to the boat for a fresh rinse. The water is nice and warm as is the air. The forecasts got kind of boring because nothing ever changed.

Everything about Bermuda is warm and friendly, Steve.

Also in Bermuda is Captain Smokes Marine, just past the fuel dock, Med moor. Dingy club is very friendly and it is usually also Med moor, but they do have slips. If you are going to be there any length of time, rent a scooter for two for the week, fairly inexpensive by the week and it expands your ability to get around and see the entire island. The last time I was their, there was a small dockage fee for the sea wall in St. Georges and no utilities, but Bermuda yacht, dingy club and captain smokes are great. My experience with the dingy club is that it may take a couple of days to get back to you as they are all volunteers. Great trip, been there four times on my boat

I am not so sure about those scooters. I rode motorcycles and bicycles for a good part of my life so riding doesn't bother me. The problem with Bermuda is that many of the roads are extremely narrow, they drive on the wrong side of the road, there are lots of traffic circles and the buses are big and go fast. It was even a little scary walking in some places. The buses are great. A steady stream of them keep moving along all the routes so you never have to wait long for one to stop. I met some of the nicest people, both local and tourists who give you a lot of information while you are riding along, looking at the scenery without worry of your imminent death. The pass also lets you take all the ferries so you could go to Hamilton, take a ferry to the Dockyard and mess around there for a while and then get on another ferry and go around the north side of the island and right back to your boat. It is easy to carry back packs and it is just one less thing to worry about. Don't even think about getting on one if you are wet. They are clean, air conditioned and were generally good fun, Steve.

Re: Bermuda berths

Alan,
Thanks for the info - we moved here (Virginia Beach) from Port Jefferson - had our previous Hunter anchored in the harbor. In your four trips have you used the services of a weather forecaster and if so, what was your experience.
Thanks,
Jeff
