Bent Turn buckles again!

It seems I have not found a way to rais my mast by myself without a turnbuckle attendant contantly ajusting the shrouds so that they do not bind on bend. Does anybody have a permanent solution? Crazy Dave? Anybody? The Duct tape to the life lines solution is marginal at best. Frank Ladd333@aol.com

Tubing

I've only raised my mast twice, so my experience with my H26 is limited but here's what I'm trying this season. Like you, I will be lashing my shrouds to the lifelines to help hold them in the proper position. Secondly, I cut some large diameter clear plastic tubing to 10" lengths. I removed the turnbuckles and slipped the tubing on and then refastened the turnbuckes. The tubing slides down over the turn buckles and helps hold them up. Additionally I put two 1.5" slits on the bottom of each tube so it can slide down over the eyestrap (think that's what it's called) for additional security. Hope it works. 3/4 up

I found that when I raise or lower my mast I lock the mast at about 3/4 up and ensure the shrouds are not fouling. I have raised and lowered my mast many times over the past 5 years and to date have not bent the turnbuckles. When your almost up lock the mast and check the turnbuckles, ensure they are set correctly then resume the raising. I have done this alone and with family members helping. Good Luck.... The only other option is to leave it up with the boat in slip, it sure is easier and less worries....

Velcro Ties

I bought some of the velcro ties from West Marine and now loop them around the life lines and the shrouds to hold them in place. On the same note anyone know where to get the "T" bolts for them? I would like to replace a couple that I bent a little before I started using the straps.

I ordered 12 t-bolts after bending 2 the first year. Since taping the shrouds to the life lines during mast raising I haven't had to use any of the spares. I got the phone number and address from Hunter. I believe the rigger they get them from was in Florida also. I called him and he took my credit card over the phone. I had them in about a week. Sorry I don't have the number anymore, but Hunter should be able to give it to you.

T-Bolts with Toggle. West Marine....

catalog on page 914. The H26 uses 4 of the 5/16" by 4"long with left hand thread. $8.99 a pop. I just replace mine on a boat we just bought. Do not try to straighten your old bolts as stainless isn't forgiving when bent. I used those plastic tie wraps on the chain plate u-bolts to keep the lower metal and clevis pin centered in the top of the u-bolt. Use the number you need to center the shackle with the one next to the shackle having some tail on it so the shackle can't slide down. Check them anyway while raising. Ray

chafe tape

when the pole is up, take some chafe tape and wrap it in and around both the turnbuckle and the base a few times - this will hold it at the right spot forever and keep the turnbuckle from getting into a place where it will bind, even after numerous steppings. I've never seen this system fail, but I always check their condition before raising and also stop 3/4 the way up and inspect all the cable connections 1 last time b4 full step. Another thing i did was add the foot long pvc tubing w/endcap to cover the buckle and shroud, and then butting up against the endcap i started the plastic shroud cover installation, so the entire system stays stiff even when the mast is lowered. All my shrouds have the plastic covers and I found this makes them stiffer and easier to wrap and unwrap during the setup. The above 'improvements' plus the sewn on white leather spreader covers make for a thought free process. Brian

t-bolts

You can get t-bolts at west marine. I have had to replace mine over the last couple of years. Make sure you measure the length of where they are in relation to the turnbuckle before you take them off so you do not have to retune your rig after installing. Dave Oberholtzer "Hydrotherapy"

Bungee Cords

I use bungee cords to tie the turnbuckles up to the lifelines. They have enough strength to hold them up as the mast is raised. They also give enough so that they don't interfere with raising the mast.
