about a month ago I hooked a crab pot while sailing...discoverd this when I started the egine. Had to go over board and cut the line and unravel it; and release the float between the prop and hull...thought everything was ok. today when I went in the water to wipe clean the shaft, strut and prop, I noticed the strut was bent; I had googles on. now I know why the rear transmission seal leaks a little as well. I believe the strut is made of bronze. Looks like a hull out. How do they go about bending this back in place? It's about an inch and a half bent to port. Will they need to pull the shaft? how about the shaft alignment? any insight will be appreciated.

WOW, i FEEL YOUR PAIN. Had to have mine done last year. Dont try to straighten, waste of time, never the same. Yes its a haul out, possible rudder/ strut drop. mine $1500, time on the water, priceless. Pray for Wind, Lugeman

Sorry to hear it.

I have had similar luck this year. You need to haul but probably can replace with new strut and cutless bearing without removing the rudder. Without the strut holding the shaft there is enough side play to remove the prop and strut. Slide the new one on the shaft and rebed(NOT 5200) and rebolt(new stainless) with locknuts and good backing. Then check the alignment and correct. Be careful about adding big backing plates. Better to have the strut bend or break then pull a large backing plate through the hull. An expert owner I know did this. He welded large rods to the bolt heads and inserted from the inside. With the nuts on the outside he can remove the strut without help. Even in the water.
