Bent stanchions

I have two bent stanchions and a bent stern rail. My first approach was to simply remove them and replace them. But on a 21-year old boat, duplicates are hard to come by even if I could remove them since the bolts that hold them to the deck are through the deck and glassed in from the bottom in a totally inaccessible area. Does anyone know a way to straighten these things in situ?

Peter: Are you sure that they are GLASSED in? Maybe there is a backing plate under the deck! Anyway, you will need to remove these from the boat to have them straightened/replaced. If you decide to have them replaced you could send one of them to TIQ (www.topsinquality.com). They can probably give you an estimate for new ones and/or repair. You may also be able to just take them to a local shop that deals with stainless and they can repair it for you. Same goes for the stern rail (local shop).

Yup.

I am sure there are backing plates because the forward stanchions have them. The forward ones are also easier to get at. The midship ones cannot be got at from under the deck and I can only assume they are glassed in because I can feel nothing but glass on the underside of the deck opposite the stanchions. Someone once mentioned a motorcycle shop as a good place to get tubing straightened. One wonders of such a shop would have a portable device that could do the straightening in place?

They may need to be polished too.

Peter: They may also need polishing. If the have a bad kink, you may not have much strength left so be careful. I would find a S.S. fabricator in the area and get their opinion. Someday, these thing could save your life. I think you are looking at about $50-70 for a new one.

I have a 27ft. Hunter....she is a 1984....I had a bent Stanchion from rafting up last year over July 4th. Could not replace the stanchion....Took it off and had it welded. They did a pretty good job....sometimes it's hard to find replacement items for her!!!!....but she is still doing well. Cheers, and smooth sailing, Carol
